The Music of Motley Crue

'Shout At The Devil' scared the shit out of me when it came out and it still has a place in my heart today. Urban's right about there being just enough punk attitude to keep it (and previous album) from being standard arena-friendly hair metal. It is close though.

Dr. Feelgood was a great album. Kickstart My Heart and She Goes Down were standouts but pretty much every song on that album I can listen to.

Listened to their first album yesterday "Too Fast for Love" and as Urban said its largely a glam rock album infused with punk and as sleazy sounding as hell!!! In all fairness, its a rather average sounding affair and on a par with Ratt etc but in its favor it does have a level of consistency from start to finish and is probably better than I expected it to be. Best track is probably "Piece of Your Action" its probably the sleaziest sounding on there.

Today I`ll be listening to their second "Shout at the Devil"

Brother got right into Motley Crue when we both got into rock/metal/etc. I was listening to GNR and Metallica and just would not give them a chance because of the look of them. Early GNR was bad enough. These guys were too much. I finally got past it and have been a big Motley (and Nikki Sixx) fan ever since. The FEELGOOD album would have to be my favorite, GIRLS was pretty kickass too. The song "Girls Girls Girls" has one of the best riRAB ever in my opinion.

One thing that keeps Motley from being a real favorite of mine is Vince Niel. I just don't respect the guy, and don't think he has any music ability at all. He doesn't write anything, can't play any instruments and is a terrible singer. He annoys the **** out of me, especially watching him live.

I am a huge Nikki Sixx fan and respect the hell out of him. I love his SIXX:AM album more than ANY Motley album. What a album.

I`ve just listened to their second album "Shout at the Devil" and despite all its negative criticism, actually enjoyed it even more so than their first album, best song was "Too Young to Fall in Love" and hey!!! there was even a Beatles cover on there in "Helter Skelter"

It seems that most Motley fans, state Dr.Feelgood to the group`s best.

Surprised you think that about Vince Neil`s voice, as I think his voice is perfectly suited to this type of sleazy, trashy glam metal style.

As for his writing ability, he seems to average about 25% contribution on each album so far.

After listening to their fourth album Girls, Girls, Girls its probably the worst for Vince Neil`s voice so far, in comparison to the previous albums. Also, the album is probably poorer than their earlier efforts, despite the fact that it has some of their best known songs on it "Girls, Girls, Girls" "Wild Side" "You`re All I Need" but the remainder of the albums is piss poor with riRAB and tunes from previous albums. The album though, does represent the decadent and hard living lifestyle of the group and for that reason its worth a listen.

right, but the initial comment about protools came up in regarRAB to Neil's vocals on 'theatre of pain'. everyone knew the band was going to crap in the late 80s, you can only snort so many mountains of cocaine before things go bad.

as a kid i remeraber 'smoking in boys room' getting airplay all over the place, same with a few other singles from around that time then they basically disappeared until 'dr. feelgood'.

Listened to their fifth album Dr.Feelgood today and have to agree with the general consensus, in that its easily their best album. Its solid from start to finish and has the songs unlike Girls, Girls, Girls which apart from a couple of songs, just didn`t have the songs in general. I`ve gotta say Dr.Feelgood impressed me.
