The Most Overrated Cartoons Ever

Like the title says.

What do you think are the most overrated shows, movies, or characters ever?

Here's my list (Note: I know there are several toons here I've complained about in other threads, but I think it's about time I really give my honest opinion on toons I did not cover.):

Anything by Seth McFarland and Seth Green: Their shows are nothing but painful, tasteless examples of what happens when you give guys too much free time and money. I just can't see the humor in any of these shows. It's all too mean-spirited and heart-breaking to watch. Not to mention all the humor is to reliant on tasteless parodies and dated political humor, disgusting displays of toilet humor and sex, stupidity and repetitive jokes, and the fact that the creators don't care about anything at all.

Drawn Together: see above

Naruto: Sure I read the manga and I watch the eps that stay true to the manga storylines, but the filler eps were truly atrocious. Not to mention I can't stand the way they treat poor Naruto. It's sickening!

Inuyasha: Like Naruto, I just can't stomach the treatment of the main character. It's just too much to handle. It's so hard to concentrate on the story and action without worrying the way the main character is treated after all he's been through.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy: Like Family Guy, The humor is too tasteless, mean-spirited and repetitive, there are a lot of characters I just can't sympathize with and is a show that's going to get frowned on in the next decade.

Ed, Edd, N' Eddy: Well at first, it was good, but over time, it became so repetitive and none of the stories and specials never got any better.

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: the only problems I have with this show is the narcissistic attitude of Bloo and the bland humor.

Just so we're clear, "overrated" doesn't mean "I don't like that show". It means that a show receives more praise than you feel it deserves.

That said, I never quite understood the popularity of Ben 10: Alien Force. I watched a few episodes of it, and I just don't see what makes this one so much better than the 1st series.

Also, there's Rugrats. Initially, I thought that it was just an OK show, nothing to write home about, but OK, but then after Nick started airing the series every day and it became huge, I never understood what all the fuss was about. I thought it was great how Rugrats used human characters for a change of pace, but that's about it.

These types of threads never go well specifically because no one ever understands this. And unfortunately I think the first post post exemplifies this point.

And to keep this on topic...I'd have to say Histeria. It was an all right show. Nothing all that amazing. But all right. Yet lately I keep seeing it lumped together with Tiny Toons, Animaniacs and Freakazoid as examples of classic WB animated TV shows.

That's all I can think of right now.

As do I. Ed, Edd and Eddy was one of those shows that just got better with each season. Sure, some of the plots and concepts were somewhat repetitive, but the fantastic animation, offbeat music and sound effects and quirky characters more than made up for it.

One show I'd consider overrated (not hated, BTW) is Star Wars: Clone Wars. It's not terrible, mind you, but there does seem to be a whole lot of excess hoopla attached to what is essentially a run-of-the-mill action cartoon, just because it happens to bear the Star Wars label.

Aside from many animes anything show with Seth Mcfartlanes name on it is overrated in my opinion, his characters are mostly dull and boring and his parodies mean just copying things and cramming his fat bloated bath tub toy characters in the place of the original characters.

SpongeBob Squarepants: It used to be good, but after the movie and Stephen Hillenburg's departure, the quality had dropped sharply. Yet Nickelodeon airs marathons of it all day, and overhypes these crappy "specials."

Can't argue with ratings and success.

But I'll meet you halfway. Personally, I think the first three seasons deserve all the praise they get. The most recent seasons? Not so much.

Family Guy -I find this show totally unfunny and annoying. I don't see why people would like it.

South Park -See above

Simpsons -Don't get me wrong, its an alright show, I just don't see how it lasted for 20 seasons

Spongebob Squarepants -I like it an all, its just I don't see how 8-year-old reruns make it into the top 20 highest rated shows every week.

True, I hated when those promos kept calling it "The greatest show ever made", when it's just "a not all that great, but not all that bad show". Content wise, some episode literally put me to sleep and I won't wake up til morning.

Because it's an easy show to enjoy and has enough elements that appeal to both little kids and adults. It's the sort of show where you can come home from a long day at school or work, turn it on, shut your brain off and just have a good laugh. It's got the goofy humor and colorful characters that appeal to kids, but there are enough interesting adult characters and themes that also appeal to adults. Whatever the reason, Spongebob just clicked with a wide variety of people and IMHO it definitely earned it's popularity.

This thread also seems to have the potential to turn into a Family Guy bash thread.

Where to start:

Spongebob Squarepants. I just can't find much of anything good to say about this cartoon. There are occasional flashes of truly funny material, but otherwise I really never understood the draw of this cartoon. I disliked it from the get-go, and fail to see what makes it so appealing to 95% of the population. Is stupidity really that popular now?

The Simpsons. They're just trying to push it to 30 seasons now, aren't they? It's become nothing but in-jokes and heartless scripts. Combine this with the fact that I never cared or the series when it was supposedly "good". I remember the first wave of incessant Bart merchandising back in the early 1990s, and even then I just didn't get the cartoon.

Family Guy, American Dad et al. What Ickis said. I just don't see the humor in them, and I can't identify with any of the characters. It's all just unfunny and mean-spirited in my opinion, and I don't see what anyone sees in it.

I'd list more, but I can't think of any now. I don't see anything in Ren & Stimpy at all, but I could just be a bit prejudiced since all I know about that show is what others have told me. Maybe it's an acquired taste.

Care to explain why?

Because as it stands this is just another "I dislike so-and-so and I have no idea why someone else would like it" sort of thread. Which, as I always say, is incentive for the Spongebob and Family Guy haters to come out of the wood work.

Since you asked...

I have NEVER laughed or enjoyed myself during an episode of the Simpsons or Spongebob. Period. Not only that but they really over merchendised both series and I never knew anyone who really cared much for either series, even though they both did very well. I always shook my head at those that enjoyed this stuff...

Indeed. It's okay to have a different opinion than everyone else, but threads like these just go nowhere and add little positive discussion.

Just my two cents, though, so you all do what you want; I'm staying outta here.

Of course, just because you don't like it doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with the people who do. So there's no reason for you to shake your head because someone else likes something as innocent as Spongebob. Just sayin'.

And I'm taking DLA's advice here. I'm out too.
