Agreed about the timing of the film, should have been on later in the evening and uncut

Why the fuss? This was lame, especially the excruciatingly awful bit where the little girl stutters 'm-m-monster'.
Night of the Creeps is ten times better and even Shane 'Lethal Weapon' Black who co-wrote it has since condemned the end result.
Nostalgia be damned!

It was only lame because Five in their infinite wisdom decided to put it on at a time when young kiRAB may have been watching and therefore decided to butcher the film to bits, leaving a very thin plot

Nope. I saw it uncut (I assume it was) when it was first released on video years ago and promptly wished I'd rented something else! A real shame as I enjoyed Night of the Creeps immensely.
Fred Dekker's career then continued to nosedive with Robocop 3.
At least Monster Squad was better than Van Helsing I suppose.
