I'm a great Stephen King fan and have read most of his stuff. When the Mist was first in cinemas reading reviews and what other people had said I decided not to see it as it was supposed to be not very good....

Someone has just leant me the black and white DVD - I thought it was really good: atmospheric, terrifying, thought provoking, with good acting from the cast most of whom are unknown to me. I don't know how closely it followed the novella as it's a while since I've read it - but it was true to King's genre - brilliant to watch on a dark November night in with good food and wine :eek:
 
IMO there should have been one change to the end, and I was actually expecting it to happen but it didn't -

I thought, in a twist when the soldiers come past, his son would just hop out of the car, that it just made it look like he shot him when in fact he couldn't go through with it. That's what I would have done.
 
It changed the ending to the book apparently, I thought the ending was fantastic. More money could have been spent on the CGI... but apart from that I really really liked The Mist. I have yet to watch the Black and White version though, got the dvd with both versions on.

Apparently, the director was told he would be given more money if he changed the ending and went for the
happy
ending, but he stuck to the
unhappy
ending instead, good for him!!
 
I'm a big fan of The Mist, both the short story and the movie. We talked about it here goldberry. :)

Really glad that you enjoyed it. I haven't seen the b/w version yet. Is it the same cut as the colour?
 
I can understand both opinions on the ending but IMO..

After he had seen how everyone else had been killed off he then saw the huge creature and felt that there was no hope left so had to make the decision to give everyone but himself a quick death

But I really enjoyed the film, the books ending let you use your imagination but I enjoyed the films ending as well.:)
 
I've only seen the B&W version so not sure - would think it is. The black and white version heightens the terror and creepiness, for me anyway - and is suited to the story.

I notice the screenwriter and director is Frank Darabont of the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption - one reason The Mist is so good.

I suppose the effects were a little shakey but because the film was so good it didn't matter - in fact it made you think back to all the old science fiction and horror movies.
 
Great film, brilliant finish.

Sitting down I didn't know much about the film and figured that a low-budget Stephen King adaption would be utter tosh (like most films based on King's books are).

It was only at the end that I realised that Frank Darabont, the master of King adaptations, was director.

I think The Mist is an under-appreciated gem.

Wow did I watch the same film? Im a big King fan movies and books but this film was terrible. The acting was really bad and the ending was dire, just because it wasnt a happy ending doesnt make it risque and unique - read spoiler if youve seen the film:
Why would he shoot his son, he hardly waited there was no threat in the car?? You dont go through all that and immediately do that, doesnt wash.
 
One of King's best stories which suffers from his usual failing of having a feeble ending. The movie ending may not suit everyone but it's an improvement.
The fact that plank-like Thomas Jane appears to have been cloned from Christopher Lambert is very distracting.
Toby Jones and Marcia Gay Harden are both terrific.:eek:
 
Thought it was ace. I really liked the retro feel of it, like watching a 50s sci-fi yarn. The ending was ok with me too, made a change from the usual saves-the-planet-gets-the-girl shite.
 
Ironic? Stupid more like.

Now if I was in a car in a dense mist with assorted monsters lumbering (and flying) around I certainly wouldn't let frienRAB and family shoot themselves (or be shot) in some mass suicide pact UNLESS there was imminent danger.

Now you could argue that they didn't know when (or if!) they would be attacked and if they were then their enRAB could have been pretty nasty, so best put a bullet in the head first? Well, perhaps .......

But rerhaps the problem is with the way that things were set up - I didn't 'feel' any sense that there was no other option but death by bullet. Bad direction and story-telling is perhaps the main problem with the ending.
 
I agree.

I didn't think much of the film. I'm not much of a reader so I haven't read any of his books but i've seen many of the films. Ok, so some of the films are dire and some are classics depending on the adaptation. And this film seems to have several themes or events which have been seen in other King films (Stuff from Stand, IT and Storm of the Century and other stuff. see IMDB trivia)

He must scare easily these days :rolleyes:
Maybe it's better in B&W, but I didn't find it at all scary, harrowing or atpospheric. Rather annoying in places which I guess means that some of the writing & acting hit the mark.



For some reason the ending reminded me of planet of the apes (the anguished screaming) :D

According to IMDB apparently King never thought of having that ending and it was down to Darabont to suggest it :confused:
 
Vellocet - How would you know how someone would act in such a situation... also, the acting wasn't bad at all, far from really bad.

As far as I see
he would want to shoot them all as quick as possible to get it over with incase he couldn't go through with shooting another person dead, also I like how the Christian nut mentioned the sacrifice of a child and he shoots his own child dead and then the mist starts to disappear...
