The Minor/Lesser Character Appreciation Thread

How could I forget about Gorgonzola? He's definitely one of my favorite minor characters. Ya gotta love his snarky attitude. Too bad we don't know much about him. Even Gazpacho mentioned how we never really got to know his character on the show.

Their names are Flip and Fetch, respectively. They are from the show "The Biskitts" and they were pretty much unused, but I still like them. I guess I'm just a sucker for extremely minor characters. And don't even get me started on all the one-shot Smurfs.

Princess Bubblegum and Lady the Rainicorn from Adventure Time.

The series has only started, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Finn, Jake and Marceline will probably emerge as the favorite characters on this show. But I've always liked Bubblegum and Lady since the original short.

I admit to having something of an affinity for cute characters and girly-girls, and what's cuter than a feminine pink princess who lives in a land of living candy and whose pet is half unicorn, half rainbow?

Plus, Bubblegum has a fondness for science, which is something you don't see every day with a princess character, and in addition to that, she's voiced by Hynden Walch, TV's Starfire. Bonus.

Man I gotta think hard about this one.........

[Nam - Dragonball] I always loved this guy. He was so focused and serious while fighting and had a "do or die" reason for entering the tournament. Instead of being arrogant and a bitter loser like a chunk of focused, serious people in shounen fighting anime, he was always gracious and honorable and while he felt like he let his people down after Goku beat him, he didn't show that much and was glad he got to face someone so powerful. Also, you gotta love the cross arm dive.

[Isane Kotetsu and Chojiro Sasakibe - Bleach] Admittedly, there are quite a few minor characters in this show (it sometimes depends on your interpretation who falls where), but these two need more love from fans and Kubo himself. I love Isane because I just really like her personality and I do admit to finding her attractive. I want her to shine somewhere. As for Chojiro, most people don't even know who he is. Chojiro Sasakibe is the lieutenant of Squad 1. He is a fanatic of Western culture and according to the recent fillers, his zanpakuto, Gonryomaru, has lighting abilities. I want him to do more than just stand there behind Yamamoto and make small talk to fill panels. I want him to shock the crap out of people.

[Tom the Fish - Spongebob Squarepants] Remember the dude from "Chocolate with Nuts" that ran around manically screaming "CHOCOLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!!!!!" throughout the episode? Yeah, that's him. In fact, this is one of my favorite episodes of all time, and he's one of the reasons.

[Timmy's Dad - Fairly Oddparents] Nicktoon dads have a history of being (to some degree) bumbling and incompetent, but Mr. Turner is, in my mind, the most hilarious example (just ahead of Hugh Neutron). "Pants are for squares" is still one of my favorite lines.

I'll post more when I think of them.

SpongeBob has plenty of likable minor characters in the Bikini Bottomites. Nice to see Scooter and Tom get some love as they're some of my favorites as well, but my favorite minor character from SpongeBob would have to be Fred, the "MY LEG!!!" guy. That may be only one of his very few lines but he was always great for a laugh thanks to the wonderful Mr. Lawrence. One of his funniest moments not pertaining to leg injury was when he was a janitor at Shady Shoals listening to Surfin' U.S.A. by the Beach Boys.

On Hero 108, even though Mr. No Hands is the leader of First Squad, he hardly ever joins the group on missions. He mostly stays behind and seems to only join them when he feels like it. Plus they never really gave him his own episode.

I think she was a straw feminist caricature. She made me suspect (not for the first time) that Steve Marmel seems to have issues with female characters in general.

In the Mario games, I really like many of the Super Mario Bros. 2 enemies, like Mouser, Triclyde, Cobra, and Fryguy. I wish they would return for more games (though I think a green version of Cobra appears in Mario Pinball Land). I also like Chainchop and Firechop. Both characters don't seem to appear in very many levels of any game, but Chainchop at least does seem to be a bit popular with fans.

On Taz-Mania I like The Kiwi (such a cool design) and Wendell T. Wolf. Both characters weren't in many episodes, and Wendell is really funny.

And I enjoy Fowlmouth on Tiny Toons, especially his shouting. Shame he wasn't in more episodes.

On Darkwing Duck I like Tuskernini, though I am surprised they made an action figure of him but not Quackerjack or Negaduck. Then again, the Tuskernini figure was the first Darkwing Duck figure I owned (at a time when I didn't even know who the character was... Though I would have much rather had the Megavolt or Honker figures first).

By now I wonder if Lenny, Carl, or Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons still count as minor. They seem to have been used a lot more in the last several years. Otherwise, I like the look and voice of Professor Frink, and I also like Dr. Nick Riviera's voice. Troy McClue and Lionel Hutz are also on my list of favorite Simpsons characters... Phil Hartman did a great job with these characters, and the writers did a great job writing for them. And I also like Larry and Sam, the two barflies at Moe's who rarely get any of their own dialogue. Oh, and also Gil... Don't know why, but Gil's a great, funny character.

I assume this is limited to animated characters, right?

Since this is the General Animation Forum, I think that would be a safe assumption. ;) Discussions about non-animated characters typically go to the Entertainment Forum.

I must also add that I like Jimmy on South Park. Pretty much every episode that focuses on Jimmy is really enjoyable. And it is interesting that in these episodes Stan, Kyle, and Kenny don't get much to do (Cartman often has his own subplot, or is paired with Jimmy... And you can't go wrong with Cartman). I also like Mr. Hankey and Towlie... Two non-human characters on a show where most of the cast is human.

And when it comes to Family Guy, you can count on me being a big fan of Herbert (and hey, his voice sounds similar to Mr. Hankey and Towlie's), the Giant Chicken (a great way to stretch time), that vaudville duo, and that foreign guy who always laughs and points out why certain lines are funny. He should have been in Somethign Something Darkside, during the scene where that delivery guy delivers ice on a snowy planet (his pointing out the irony would have been funnier than Peter's annoyance at pointing out the situation).

Hmm, I guess The Cleavland Show doens't have any real minor characters yet...

Trash Can the robot dog in the Astro Boy movie is a great minor character. He's funnier than Dug from Up. Cuter too. And I prefer his barking to Dug's talking. He seems more like a real dog that way, if that makes sense. And his design is cool, he looks like a cross between a cylindrical restaurant trash can and a Bulldog. I'd love a robot dog like him.

Brianna from Kick Buttowski is pretty cool. I like their relationship, it's a mix of antagonism and mutual affection.

Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons is hilarious. He is such a rich character. The kind of classic "laugh clown laugh but he's crying inside" type.

And I think Clyde from South Park is really funny. He's a kind of observer, and comments on the craziness that Kyle and Stan and Cartman get into . He was also great in the episodes "World of Warcraft" and "The Case of the Urinal Deuce". Both classic episodes BTW.

The odd thing about Adventure Time is, even though Finn and Jake are funny, they also seem be outshined by the minor costars such as Tree Trunks, Lumpy Space Princess, and Manfried the Talking Pinata. They are all greatly hilarious.

Always liked Fenton Crackshell/Gizmoduck from Ducktales. Glad they'll be back in June in the Ducktales stories in BOOM's Uncle Scrooge comics.

Duke Phillips from The Critic is probably my favorite "evil billionaire" archetype. Yes, even more than someone like Mr. Burns. Because unlike Burns, Duke can be fun, happy and cheerful, and even a little sweet while still having the chance to turn disturbingly evil at the drop of a hat.

The fact he isn't more well known is simply a Duketastrophe.
