The minefield that is pre-school / nursery?

I'm just struggling to get my head round all this, and I don't really want to but I have to! I've just found out my daughter won't be able to go to the same pre-school nursery as her brother, and, even though they wouldn't be there at the same time (she's a school year younger), its annoyed me!! I registered both of them when they were a few weeks old and I've found out he is at no3 on a list of 25 places, so will definitely get in, but my daughter is at no51 and has no chance. Because she was born at the end of the academic year the places were already booked. It just means for a year (while he is at the attached primary school - assuming he gets in as it's the nearest) I'll have to drop them off at separate places.

And I don't get why some pre-schools offer September starts only, others also do January and April intakes. And it varies how many days / hours etc they must do, some places seem much more flexible than others. Why is there no consistency and how am I meant to decide what to do?! I feel like moving house....arggghhhhh!

Any advice or experience of this? Thanks!

What primary school nursery has an admissions policy which means you have to register kids at a few weeks old? I'm sorry, that's appalling.

I think you should speak to the head of the primary school. I'm reasonably sure the nursery's policy is illegal, if they're the only attached nursery/playgroup for that primary. We were _required_ to share the available funded places out between all the kids who wanted to come if we were oversubscribed, and if that meant that everyone was offered four sessions rather than five, then that was the way it was.

I don't quite understand this, though. From what you say, your son must be more than a year older than your daughter - since she's a school year younger AND is in the young end of it. So how can you know she won't get in yet? It must be over a year until she'd start!
