The Metal Education Thread

I totally agree, man!!!It's like some people don't like hair metal or numetal, but if numetal is going to be mentioned, then hair metal is necessary...
...and it actually includes talented musicians that wanna fukk every girl they see!!!;)

Sabbath were heavy metal, in the late 1970s, 1980s yes, but as has been stated in the past things change, nowadays sabbath would (in my opinion) be regarded as heavy rock when compared to heavy metal which developed from it

take manowar, formed in the late 70s and were probaly influenced in some part by sabbath, joey di maio was working as sabbaths road crew when they decided to form manowar! but they took those influences along with others to develop the heavy metal sound of today, while sabbath may have been called heavy metal back then, it was because there was nothing to compare it too! an to them it was heavy! now they would be considered heavy rock.

all you have to do is listen to what manowar/maiden/saxon were releasing at the same time as sabbath to notice a distinct difference!

all these things you have been quoting from magazines and websites may be saying they are heavy metal, but think about it if you were a metal magazine, and there was a band as succesful as sabbath out there, wouldnt you want to bend the truth just a little bit so you could include them! it happens.. ive even seen metal hammer refer to bullet for my valentine (who for the record i despise) as thrash! now if someone found that on the web they could quote that easily enough and not think anything of it!

Korn is definately NuMetal, I would say their latest album has some elements of funk, even though Ive only heard one song off of it. They are totally akin to Limp Bizkit and all other banRAB of that vain though

I agree. Many people find hard to tell the difference between facts and opinions.
I'll first check out the first source to go too, this thread.
Here is Doom Metal:

I am staying neutral at the moment. Anyone else should refer to this though at least if you dont have any evidence of your own.

Slayer is thrash/speed metal. Some other metal banRAB you might like:

Pantera
Megadeth
Venom
Sepultura
Testament
Death
Exodus
Overkill
Metal Church

i see what your trying to do and how this is some sort of education for the many people who are trying to understand whats a cool type of sub genre to be into but like all sub genres nay genres it just starts getting stupid. When i was 15 there was a handful of genres in the metal world, thrash, speed, death, black and a few more it didnt take me long to realise that there wasnt much difference between most of the banRAB yeah sure cannibal corpse sounded heaps different from metallica but its not so drastic that i would make a whole subgenre. sub genres are just a piss weak excuse to copy other banRAB or to make your band seem different, dont you realise that these genres are mostly invented by the banRAB who play them and its getting rediculous, the other day i was speaking to the bass player for a very fast very heavy metal band there really good but i asked him what style of metal his band was his reply was oh its a like hatecore with some goregrind and deathcore. what? whats that? but every band does this it makes them think that they are different from their influences.
Black metal and death metal in the early days was bad production yes true but thats because they couldnt afford good production. but look at Dimmu they are now not considered black metal by the purests why because its not all blast beats and scratchy guitars, why would someone just do blastbeats and scratchy guitars if you go to a black metal night all the banRAB sound the same its boring, music is art, yes even metal and art is about pushing the boundaries not just copying someone else.
So instead of creating these sub genres why not just realise that metal is metal and you like what you like and dislike what you dont like there really isnt much difference between melodic death and death metal. Its not a production thing because some death metal banRAB have really good production these days.
seriously hard core is pretty much based on the size of the drumkit and the vocals but you put a slightly different vocalist in hard core its then death metal or hate core
So please tell me i think these banRAB are great at what they do tell me why they belong in different sub genres: DAmaged -token remedies research or do not spit, Blood duster - yeest or st8 out of northcote, slayer- divine intervention how does it differ in genre to god hates us all- fear factory -demanufacture. cryptopsy- whispers or and then youll beg, dimmu -pum, meshuggah, fantomas, the bezerka, strapping young lad - city, testament -demonic.
now all these albums or banRAB have heavy guitars, extreme drums lyrically they are about all sorts of things, some are really complex but does that make them prog some use samples some sometimes sing cleanly, in the case of damaged his voice is completly differnt from anything.
All these albums share something and that is that they have stood out at one time in my collection all because they offered something i hadnt heared before not because it was the latest death metal album.
So screw sub genres and while were at it screw genres they exist so people, not you, can make money and limit your minRAB to the possibilities of music

THE METAL OBSERVER--Album Review:

"This album is a bloody masterpiece. This is the best album SABBATH has and will ever make. If you are after the ultimate Heavy Metal-guitar-riff then "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is that riff. Forget "Smoke On The Water", "Rock'n'Roll" and hell, even "Paranoid". They don't stand a chance. Evil, heavy, powerful. Awesome.

"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is the reason we listen to Heavy Metal-music."

Black sabbath are metal or my world has no meaning. Well, my world has no meaning anyway but Black sabbath are still damn metal. Any band who's frontman bites of bats and doves head is like... Damn skippy.

Goregrind?

Someone made that up and is now laughing his head off at people taking it seriously, right? For the love of Satan, seeing as this is metal after all, what is to possibly be gained by over-defining EVERYTHING?

Oh, and Sabbath are metal. Anyone who spent the 70's wearing a leather and headbanging will tell you that.

Sometimes I don't really like Bruce's voice, it reminRAB me of a violin!
But with Bruce, they did make better albums afterward.

p.s - its filtered the word 'D|ckinson'

 Rush? In the same genre as Opeth?

Come on, if Sabbath aren't Metal there's no chance in hell that Rush are, they're practically the old people in bill caps when you listen to them next to an Opeth song ...

Whats this deal with people calling all the metal banRAB of the 70s 'rock' now?

I used to live next door to a biker when I was growing up,and him & his biker mates were all 'metal' fans. I asked him to give me some tapes of some metal when I was 6 or 7 years old he gave me Sabbath , Rainbow , Judas Preist , Samson , Def Leppard , Saxon and loaRAB of others.

Just because those banRAB are not what you know as metal now doesn`t mean they never were.

I`d be interested to see how many old metal banRAB people who think of Sabbath as a 'rock' band rather than a metal band to name at least 20 banRAB who they would call metal from that time by todays standarRAB.Because I know there were many more than that.

A fellow Dream Theater fan. Welcome to rab. :)
Yeah I agree you should listen to Megadeth. They're amazing- one of my favourite banRAB. Pantera are also good, and you should have a listen to early Metallica.
