The Metal Education Thread

In regard to the opening post in this thread:

Black Sabbath was the first true heavy metal band. Judas Priest didn't even release their first album until 1974, and it was weak compared to what Black Sabbath had been playing since 1970.

Priest didn't even really hit the big time until they released "Stained Class" in 1978. Black Sabbath had been international superstars since 1970, thanks to their second album "Paranoid".

Wikipedia hit the nail on the head:

"Even though Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Deep Purple may have had a profound influence on the emergence of hard rock and heavy metal music, Black Sabbath is considered to be the first true heavy metal band."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sabbath

Also people`s perception of metal changed in the mid 80s when thrash banRAB came along. Before then banRAB like Led Zeppelin , Rainbow , Thin Lizzy and pretty much everything you now call 'classic rock' was considered metal , yes even Status Quo , who were regually mentioned in metal magazines in the 80s.

I am realy not sure, I think that songs like Charlotte the Harlot have a defenate Punk sound. But Killers and Murders in the Rue Morge (Spelling) are clearly Heavy Metal.

I think Wikopedia has a nice article on Iron Maiden. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Maiden_(band)

I like what I have heard from Samson "Riding with the Angels" is a jam.

maiden we're, whilst with paul dianno im sure at some point considered to be punk in their early years, also im pretty sure he wasn't kicked out when maiden decided to tour with priest because they wanted a better singer, have you heard paul dianno's vocals? it rate him over bruce ****ingson any day, plus im damn sure there we're a couple of vocalists that came before paul dianno. at some point im almost positive that steve harris was the vocalist.

So then, I guess none of you guys have ever heard a solo before, huh? Since you've never hear Nile before, how do you think you can say that they're death metal and that they're "almost unlistenable", ya know?Nile may be called a certain type of metal, but they sound like noone else!!!They are musicians that can play creative, fast, intelligent and original music all while creating a new sound. When you say that "it's almost unlistenable", I guess I can believe you somewhat!!!:bringit: A Numetal fan probally wouldn't be able to listen to or properly understand the speeRAB of Nile's fast rhythm and lead guitar work, so, because you guys don't understand it, I guess you can call it "unlistenable"!!!Numetal is just a basic rhythm guitar riff at best, along with rapping and continuously sampled beats!!!Rapping is not a "talent" that is really hard to achieve!!!:finger: Although it may get fast at times, it doesn't add any intensity, aggression or drive to a hardrock or metal tune and the samples don't make it more hardrockin' either!!!

With hard rock and metal ya gotta "learn do listen...
...instead a be dissin'"

Wow, look, I just rapped there!!!I've mastered the art of rapping, yall bit ches!!!

Like posting on an internet forum?

and i think this subject neeRAB dropped, if rise hasn't changed his mine quoting a 100 more sites wont do crap and i agree with rob.

I would like to thank Riseagainstrocks for making this thread. I now found some new great banRAB that I like and i use this to label the genres on my iTunes. Keep up the great work!

Hey all, I'm a metal noob, I only know prog metal, Dream Theater, LTE, Opeth etc, mainly into my prog and indie. Blah, anyway I think Slayer are awesome, much better than all the other metal badns i've heard, they have lyrics you can hear, and when the scream they use it to good effect, and they have gorgeous melodies, what type of metal is this and where can i get more slayeresque stuff?

Cheers :D

Nitpickiness is lame, but I can throw in another couple cents.

Instead of fascism as lyric topic for black metal, you could put national socialism. It's more common, they have a name for it... National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM).

In death metal possibly mentioning Possessed, arguably being the first.

And I don't think The Mars Volta are metal.

well, Crowquill gave me the layout, and I used my own vast knowledge, a few books (most notably Choosing Death: The Improbable History of Death Metal and Grindcore by Albert Mudrian. I highly reccomend this if you are at all into Death or Grind), some very smart frienRAB, my Uncle Paul who is basically the expert at all things Progressive (sorry boo boo, he's got you beat), and some internet articles to fill in the holes.

thanks for the support! Version 2 due out March-ish!

So, what about Math Metal?

Bah, I guess that could be considered a sub-genre of Prog, making it a sub-sub-genre...

I do agree that New Wave of British Heavy Metal deserves a mention.

Yeah, Music Man, while Sabbath had a massive influence on the style of music we collectivly call metal, I think (and many people agree with me) that they are more rock than metal. I mean, compare that album to others of the day. Then listen to Priest.

Were they heavy? Definitly
Inventive? Absolutly
Metal? Probably not.

This is my opinion, and you're welcome to disagree. Thanks for your imput however.

I only mentioned Wikipedia and I wasn't "poisining the well" I was only saying Wikipedia would not be a good source for said reason.
