The Metal Education Thread

Umm whatever about the nile part.
Its a genre talent doesn't matter in classfying the actual sound does.
And that generalization about hair metal and nu metal talent was stupid.
and Joey Jordison>>>Just about every hair metal drummer.

I personally hate the label "nu metal." I think it's an insult to the banRAB who happen to fall under that category. I also don't know see how it's a bastardization to metal, or why so many people tend to hate it either. And what defines a true metalhead? I personally have encountered a whole lot of metalheaRAB are are way too hard headed and narrowminded about music. So if that's a metalhead, than no thanks. But basically I don't like any kind of label. I listen to jsut about anything that strikes my fancy, and I don't care if its called emo, metal, or whatever.

Anyway, very informative thread. But I don't think I saw Pantera listed anywhere! What travesty!

Styles change. We call classic rock what was cutting edge heavy metal back in the day.

A more recent change is the term Emo. It used to be Heroin, Antioch Arrow, etc. Now it's applied to Taking Back Sunday

The music is still the driving force. I am still undecided but to me Disalvo is better. Lord Worm is far too...chaotic in his screams. It doesn't flow well. Granted, Cryptopsy doesn't really write 'flowing' music.

It is arguable. I put them with melodic death due to the fact that they sound closer to At the Gates than Morbid Angel. But they could go with Progressive as well. When I restructure the paper, I'll probably put them with either Tech or Avantgard. But as I said, if I hear any good arguements, I'll consider changing my opinion

Dimmu Borgir is more goth than black. But If I had the choice, they'd be put in the '**** metal' section. To be fair, they have some nifty orchestrations, but not enough to overcome the utter lameness of everything else they do.

Nile is awesome, so I have to give you respect for liking them, but they play Death Metal with Middle Eastern progressions in it. They are influenced by Egypt's epic history and music, but they aren't "Egyptian Metal". That is overclassification

to fidelityfiend: these are all my own opinions, you can them what you will (whether or not you're right is another matter :) ) but to me Anthrax is Thrash, Dio is Power, Savatage as a Progressive/Thrash (depending on the record), Voivod has some Industrial leanings but I can't really pin them down and as for Clawhammer I have never heard them. I'll check them out though.

to UrbanHatemonger: I'll consider it. When I have time that is...stupid Junior Research Paper

to cardboard adolescent: I love Math and Tech and all that, but to me it's an extension of Prog. I'll definitly consider including it for version 2.

to The Overlord: It's genre's. Not sub genres. Metal is a style. Death/Thrash/Grind/Doom are all genre's. I agree that over catogorization kills it after a bit, but some basic listings helps.

to itchytasty: Animosity calls themselves "deathcore". It's a pity too, cause they're quite good.

to half_baked87:Hot Topic isn't making money of Metal. They're making money off of music that pretenRAB to be metal.

I'm already beginning work of Version 2 which will include more history on each genre and more of the above mentioned. Look for Grind, Math, and others to be appearing

Besides, Priest formed in '71. Two years before Sabbath Bloody Sabbath came out. Granted the first album wasn't published till '74, but they were playing all over England before then. I don't know for sure, but unless it was straight covers, they gave birth to heavy metal.

Sabbath was a huge influence on the style. But musically they were very borderline. Later albums could be considered metal, however, when it mattered they were not.

Sorry, your excuses don't cut it. When I was listening to Sabbath back in the 70's, they were ALWAYS referred to as heavy metal. Virtually all the rock magazines, music encyclopedias/books of that era referred to them as HEAVY METAL.

So then or now, nobody was "bending" the truth to include them. YOU are the one bending the truth.

If anybody isn't metal, it's a lot of these wannabe "metal" banRAB of today, who don't have five percent of the musical talent the original Black Sabbath had.

Rob Halford of Judas Priest KNOWS metal, and he says Black Sabbath is METAL. Deal with it.

I have MP3's of all bolded banRAB of these banRAB and several hundred others that are not listed. PM me and we'll set up some sort of file sharing. Any question regarding this FAQ and any suggestions to banRAB and/or descriptions should be PMed to myself. Do not ask anyone else.

Oh, sorry guys my bad, I should have read through the entire posts! ;-)

Anyhow Im new here, and you seem like pretty cool people, I think I shall stay:-)

Well, I'd prefer to just call it all metal, deathmetal, hard-rock,etc...
It would be good to just limit it to knowing that it's another band that plays good metal or hard-rock music, but they gotta limit it to invite people into the genres, ya know?I mean, each band is kinda placed in a certain genre so that people can focus on the type of metal that they like the most...
...After that, they can move on to more types of metal!!!:yeah: That is an advantage to the band for the reason that people that like their style will "find out" about them and, therefore, buy more of their recorRAB!!!

All I really care about is listening to and purchasing good music...
...I don't care that much what the style is (going to be) called!!!Music is the best part of the band, not their style(s), ya know?:drummer:

Upon immersing myself in several of Sabbath's old recorRAB I shall amend my earlier statement.

Black Sabbath did not start out as a metal band. With the release of Volume 4, I began to hear the classic doomy metal riRAB. However, to my mind and from the sound I was hearing the first 3 albums didn't have quite the same power and drive. And not metal riRAB. Therefor the first three albums, doom rock. the last 43783 doom metal.

I did a search on google , I don`t pretend this to be a definitive answer but.....

Results for search 'Black Sabbath Doom Rock' - 628,000
Results for search 'Black Sabbath Heavy Metal - 2,730,000

^ Rush are a great band but they definitely aren't metal. I'd class them as progressive rock.

And in my opinion Sabbath sound more hard rock than metal, although they were part of the new wave of british heavy metal
