Q. The Matrix Trilogy. Does it deserve more respect?

Like many others in the thread, I agree that the first film is a bit special. I think it works very well as a stand alone film. It has a beginning, a middle and nice open ending... However, I wonder if the first film is now tarnished by those ultimately unnecessary sequels.
I do like The Smiths and chateau fight scenes in Reloaded, but the rest of it just vanishes up its own backside.
