Although television loves to display Americans as ignorant dimwits who have never bothered to expand their horizons, there are a lot of intellectual and imaginative people who I've come across, and I'm only fifteen years of age.
In a majority of my classes we ask to have political discussions and hold debates. Recently we've been discussing the conflicts between the Croatians and the Slovs, the culture in Iraq and how Islam is viewed on a global scale, literature from France, Germany and the Czech Republic. On top of this, there are already five classes dedicated to global studies as well as the six languages offered at my school. If anything, Americans praise different cultures and admire them.
I've noticed that anything "stupid" is associated with Americans. For example, Bloc Party's lyrics, "Stop being so American, there's a time and there's a place." It just sort of had me thinking really. I mean, I thought that was a great line but is it truly how the British view Americans?
How could Americans be so stupid when, if there's a country in crisis, they are among the first nations called for a helping hand. People from other countries talk about moving to America to escape political storms and create a better life for themselves and their children.
I'm not saying the U.S. is the most fantastic country in the world, because we, just like any other nation, have our flaws (health care, highest obesity rate, corrupt political officials, schools improperly funded, test scores, etc.), but I mean come on already!
I'd like to ask you for your opinion on Americans in general, and why you think they are this way.
