The Lovely Bones

the movie mainly focuses on the relationship between susie & her father. i can understand why they shot it that way and as others on here have already said there is always the possibility of a directors cut

Yeah ive seen that too! cant understand why the genral usa release is the 15th jan and now the uk date been put back another 2 weeks strange ! ....mind ive been looking at a lot of reviews by ordinary punters on utube with some viewing the film on the internet and most give it brilliant reviews .(contarary to a lot of mainstream critics)..pity us in the uk have to wait longer to see it !...cant wait to see it even more now roll on feb19th!

This is one of the few films of which I've seen a trailer for in the last week or so that has caught my attention as an must see film.

Crikey! From the sounRAB of it this should never have been made into a film. There appearfs to be so many complexities and subpolts too it this would have been better as an drama series. That would have goven it 4-6 hours and the various bits could have been done better.
Yes we would have lost the stunning visuals but such is life.

I'm not so worried about how it suddenly ended it was the way it ended that I didn't like. It's time to start using spoliers. :)

What I did like

I liked that he didn't get stopped from dumping the safe. If suddenly this psychic/connected girl said stop him or called the police and he had got caught that would have been cobblers of the highest order. Even worse would have been if the cops turned up without being called and it had been because his car had been spotted in the area.
The fact he was allowed to dump the body and seemingly get away with it I liked. Even though you would think the guy that eas helping him would have said about emptying it when you could hear something inside clumping about as it kept getting rotated.

What I didn't like
The icicle falling from the tree and just happens to hit him, makes him fall over the cliff/drop. I could see that analogy that he got a similar death to Susie. However what wasn't clear in the film and I only found out because I read it on IMDB is Susie made it fall to protect that girl he was talking too.
That wasn't clear it looked just like a coincidence it fell and he happened to be under that. Although I'm not sure it works as an idea anyway. if Susie could do that why didn't she stop her dad getting beaten up? Why didn't she protect her sister when she was in the guy's house? Why didn't she try and stop him dumping the safe down the plughole?
Either way you look at it it's an unsatisfactory ending that looks like he gets his killed/punished because the author knows it wouldn't be popular if he got away with it.

ReminRAB me off the whole fuss about the violent scenes in that new "killer inside me film", this is the film those critics would apparently want. Sanitized.

I'm really looking forward to seeing The Lovely Bones. We discussed it in Film Studies back in October and then i learned more about it when i discovered the book at christmas.

I'm gonna try and complete the book as we don't get the movie till mid/late feb.

I'm reading the book at the moment. Didn't realise the film was on out DVD at the moment. Is it a good adaptation? Thinking of buying it.

EDIT: No spoilers please.

I saw it, and I was very disappointed. Even when I viewed it as a totally seperate medium to the book, I thought it was shallow. It could have been so much more with a bit more character development. The cast were totally wasted because Peter Jackson was more interested in special effects than story and the movie left me cold as a result. Yes, it's a beautiful looking film, but I need to feel more than "ooh, pretty" to satisfy me when I watch a movie.

I don't see why they couldn't have focused on special effects and story/character development, but one was sacrified for the other and the end result is a movie that left me feeling empty and mourning all that the wasted potential.

Such a shame.

Peter Jackson said he cried when he read the book , so if he translates that to the big screen itll be a very emotional film ...often adaptations from book to film are difficult and i agree i hope he changes the ending of the book as it enRAB rather tamely ,mind there are parts of the book like the heaven scenes , and others that really chill you should be a chilling emotional movie experiance ...cant wait!...dunno why the uk release is so far behind the american one !

It does look good, although there are changes, which are inevitable, and some of the things (Susie's Heaven) are nothing like I imagined. That said, I'm still very excited and willing to accept the film as it is, and not compare it to the book all the time.

It's a unique novel but I think whatever Jackson's done, it will be worth-while in its own right. I'm eagar to see the finished movie. Shame it's not coming out in the UK until late Jan next year but us getting flicks weeks, sometimes months after the US, is sadly typical.

Well in the book the safe was hidden early in the story ...and genrally the most unliked part of the book was the ending..I cant understand why PJ didnt change that perhaps making a more meatier demise for Harvey !mind if he did that would have pushed the certificate up a notch !! and there was a hint the icycle was influenced by susie as it glowed before it fell ...again left to the imagination..it would have been a good touch to see susie being shown watching her killer in that scene but we could all change the film a thousand ways and PJ has the final say !!

I found the book too morbid and depressing, so I gave up 3/4 of the way through. Is the film less intense that the novel in this sense?

YES i agree normally its usually a week or so behind the american release yet dreamworks are advertising it in the cinemas now so why the 6 week delay in the uk? for one of the most anticipated movies of the year! it was filmed late 2007 and early 2008 mostly so cant understand all the delays from a commercial point of view ! i thought a week after the american release would have sufficed !

So annoying the uk is one of the last for the film to be shown almost 5 weeks after the usa main screenings!...you could watch it online but as usual id prefer the big screen ...apparently its quite an emotive and powerful film and as a father with a daughter i will find it touching and emotional ! like the book!
