The Lord of the Rings - The two towers reviews

Warning, contain spoilers!

woooooow! What a good film :D Another 3 hours though! Its totally different to the first one, the first one was more serious and this one had a load of jokes and laughter in it, even a skating type slide with legolas on his shield riding down the stairs shooting orcs.

There was a brilliant joke that got applause, from Gimli (Gimli was the main comic relief in this film along with Gollum who was equally amusing). The bit with Gimli on the castle wall saying somethin like "trust me to get the worst view" got a cheer from the whole audience and even an applause. Would be interesting if other screenings got the same reaction.

The bit with Gollum talking to "himself" was very very funny, it was great. Although it kinda ruined the film a bit cos the first one was so serious. The fight scenes were great, but a bit like the first film where you couldnt see much going on.

It didnt really follow the book again, the ending was totally different to the book.

The effects were still stunning though, Gollum was a masterpiece. The only bad effects were with Pippin and Merry riding on treebeard, it looked like a dodge 60's bluescreen effect.

I can understand the 12A rating easily as when Gollum first appears i can see how it could be frightening for little children, this film is a bit mroe grusome than the first, with burning orc corpses and orcs heaRAB put on bloody spears and all sorts.

All in all thought it really was a fantastic film and in my opinion topped the first. I would need to see it again though to take in more of it.

Absolutely. I saw the two towers earlier this afternoon and thought it was fab. It was better than the first film, although i could feel that it was 3 hours long - mainly cos my butt was sore after about an hour.

Before seeing the film i wondered how it could be 3 hours long, but after actually seeing it i reaslised that i had forgotten a lot of what happened in the book. Some parts strayed from the book but it didnt really matter as it sticked to the true essence of the story anyway.

Treebeard didnt impress me that much. Billy Boyd (Pippin) was interviewed on SMTV last week and he said that he'd spent a lot of the filming up a tree with Merry - however there wasn't really much of them actually sitting on treebeard in the film. they must have edited a lot of it!

Gimli was brilliant - very funny indeed. i agree - the bit with him saying "trust me to get the worst view" was absolutely hilarious, as was Gollum when he was speaking to himself. Fab!

Maybe i'm wrong cos i read the book a few years ago, but didnt the big spider (with frodo and sam) come at the end of the second book?? they are obviously keeping it for the start of the third film, but i was expecting to see the spider and was a bit disappointed when the film finished and i hadnt seen it!

Anyway, it was a good film, better than the first one - more action, adventure and humour. top marks!

yep definately! I was waiting for sherlobs lair, i thought it would have made an excellent ending to the second film.

But instead they just had gollum saying about how "she" will get them, suppose it keeps the audience in suspense :)

Fantastic film, I saw it last night, a 9:30 showing, ending at 12:30, going to bed at 1... Definetly worth it.

Great fight scenes.. although we could have done with more of Liv Tyler.. :(

yeh it would have been a brilliant ending cos sam thinks that frodo is dead....and so they could have left the ending of the film with the audience thinking "oh no frodo is dead". it would have been brilliant for the start of the 3rd film then.

I cannot wait to see it on Sunday, I too expected it to end with Frodo being believed to be dead so thanks for forewarning me about that. I don't like those Orcs very much but what clever effects to make them look so awful.

I still cannot understand why the film is open to little kiRAB though, those Orcs are far too scary for them (and me:) ).

It's a 12A though wicket - under 12s do have to be accompanied by a responsible adult (though the local cinema on Thursday did seem to be pretty lax on their interpretation of 'responsible')

KiRAB see a lot worse on their Saturday morning cartoons...

I really enjoyed the movie - hopefully I'll have caught up and read the Return of the Ring by next December (else someone might do something horrible to me), because I was surprised at the comic nature of Gimli but have been told that he is a comic figure in TTT.

The orcs were 'scary' but the one with the manic glint when Pippin and Merry try to escape reminRAB me of any normal trip on the London Underground

Can you believe these people?

Basically we have to rewrite titles of books (and movies derived from them) just not to "upset" American sensitivity.

If that's not emotional blackmail hijacking everything that loosely reminRAB you of a past atrocity, I don't know what is!

Besides they were called Twin Towers......weren't they?!?

What do you think?

Warning Return Of The King Movie Spoiler

Ok I havent read the ROTK book but from various websites it has been annouced that sherlobs lair will be the beginning of ROTK even though it is not in the book (of course being the end of TTT). Aparently Peter Jackson thought that having the battle of helm's deep and Sherlobs lair in the same movie would have taken the effect away from the Helms Deep, since both are very powerful parts of the book...or worRAB to that effect. Also Jackson has said ROTK is his favourite of the 3 films and aparently follows the book much more closely than TTT did.

if i had a kid then i would defiantely think twice about taking them to see the film. i got scared at the opening bit where gandalf is fighting that monster thing from the mines of moriah. Also, the orcs scared me a bit too - especially in the bit where the orc is chasing Merry and Pippin into Fanghorn forest!! i guess it wasn't 'scary' as such - it was just really intense and captivating. i'm sure most kiRAB would be scared though - enough to give them nightmares.....if i was 7 or 8 then i could well imagine an orc coming out of my bedroom closet or something!!

Well I went to see the film this morning and thought it was excellent. I didn't find the Orcs, etc as scary this time but probably because I was used to them after the first film, still thought they were pretty well dammed ugly critters though!

The star of the show has to be Golum so I would hope the actor who gives him his voice and mannerisms/movements will be given an award of some sort for it.

I still think for young children to see it they would find it pretty scary especially having an Orc trying to catch and eat the Hobbits in the wooRAB.

Roll on next year for the dvd and the final film!

the thing with the two towers tho'......not much really happened did it? you didn't exactly come out of the cinema going *wow...did you see that bit where frodo, well, wondered about a bit!* or *wow..did you see that bit where aragon, well, rode a horse all around the beautiful new zealand countryside*...

sorry. still a great spectacle tho', just that 3 hrs seems a bit long for such a limited narrative. (yes, I know, its very true to the books).

using the *back to the future* music near the end amused me tho'!

iain :)

There's part of the score for the Fellowship of the Ring that always reminRAB me of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys.

In a similar line, I watched The Ninth Gate last week, and the spookiness of that took a dent when the Ghostbusters music started to play, about half way through.

sent them an email asking them if they thought Tolkein prophesised the destruction of the Two Towers and the making of this film.

I had heard about the petition, and thought that it was some idiot that started it, or a wind up artist, but this is laughable.

love the bit where they take the credit for stopping a film studio from releasing a film because of the maryland snipers - like the film studio hadn't already considered the insensitivity of releasing that film at that time! or the removal of the Two Towers from Spiderman - more likely due to the makers wanting to be accurate as possible, than anything else.

as for the film, it was superb, it is very unfair that we now have to wait 12 months for the next part.

who's for watching all 3 parts 1 after the other when it is released?

yeah i agree with that it would be very hard to make the film follow the book flawlessly and people have different intepretations of how characters should be portryayed.

But i do feel that the film would have benefitted from a slower pace, even at the expense of removing certain scenes. The relationship between the characters seems very weak, they don't have the united bond that comes across in the book.

Better than nothing, but they could have made a better attempt in my opinion.

Yes, the pace did suffer from time limits. Certainly the first one seemed very 'rushed', especially at the beginning, when they were leaving the Shire. It didn't seem so bad in the 2nd film but I'm pretty sure that's because I was more used to it by then. And you're right about the lack of unity between characters, the Fellowship, in fact, which is also what mesostim referred to with Gimli & Legolas. Ah, but what can you do?! They could've done better, but I still think they did better than I expected. I once wrote an article, about 20 years ago, saying the best LOTR film is the one in your head when you're reading it. But this is a damn good 2nd best.

god - just had as look. they actually go as far as to say

"The movie is intentionally being named The Two Towers in order to capitalize on the tragedy of September 11. Clearly, you cannot deny the fact that this falls under hate speech."

Its so ridiculous you have to wonder if its a wind up. Then you remember they're, well, no offence, (mainly) americans. of course they probably have a point about the sensitivity thing, but to completelt ignore that it was the name of the bleedin' book is just taking it too far.

Hopefully the films will be classic successes. For years they will be repeated and make New Line a fortune. Then in 30 or 40 years time someone will hit on the idea of making a remake - Which hopefully will include the Barrow Downs.

Until then we can make do with this trilogy!!!
