The Lone Ranger

According to Empire website they are planning a Lone Ranger film:

"Entertainment Weekly has put its ear to the ground and learned that Jerry Bruckheimer and his Pirates of the Carribean writing team of Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio are working on a revamp of The Lone Ranger.

For those of you yet to experience your first grey hair, The Lone Ranger was originally a 1930s radio show, which gained popularity when it moved to TV in the '50s, about a masked man who righted injustice in Texas with the help of his racial stereotype Tonto and an albino horse called Silver. There was an attempt to bring him to the big screen in 1981, but it flopped. Also, bizarrely, a TV show was planned with Chad Michael Murray as the man behind the mask. Fortunately, that never made it to series.

Disney won't confirm that the project is being worked on, but it wouldn't be surprising at all. Bruckheimer seems to be on the hunt for a big boy's-own adventure series to fill the Pirates gap. He's already working on a version of computer game Prince of Persia, and this has a similar daft, big canvas romp quality to it. The essence of the story is slight, but there's plenty of scope for something halfway between Pirates and Zorro.

So, the question is who should be saddling up Silver? We could see Josh Duhamel. Or maybe Nathan Fillion, but we think he should play everyone."

I remember the 1981 movie, 'The Legend of the Lone Ranger', starring one Klinton Spilsbury (who never worked again). It was a colossal flop, but I remember thinking it not too bad at the time. Certainly seen worse.

i think they might be missing the boat a little on this one...i mean if a remake flopped in 1981 what hope is there of it being successful in 2007. Wouldnt it be better to develop a brand new western franchise? or is 'new' a dirty word in Hollywood at the moment

that is a valid point, however, pirates is based on a fairly obscure source (e.g. a theme park ride) and can pretty much be seen as a new franchise, any mention of the lone ranger just brings up visions of a old tv show which is way before my time (and i'm 30). it is going to have to take a very good cast to attract the 15-25 demographics to this film.

Yeah I think of an old TV show when I think of The Lone Ranger as well and im 29. However the majority of people in the 15-25 age range have not even heard of The Lone Ranger so it could work if done correctly. Just look at Zorro and those films as they attracted a modern audience!

Ahh Childhood memories of Saturday afternoon matinees at my local Cinema.

The Lone ranger was always a favourite but it was many years later I learned the names on my heroes.

Why not a remake
