I have never seen the original but just came across this on Film Four. What a great film with some outsatnding performances from Elliot Gould, Angela Lansbury and Arthur Lowe.

I saw the remake first and loved it so I decided to watch the original and really there is no comparison, the original is truly a masterpiece.

The remake is an enjoyable romp, but Cybil Shepherd and Elliot Gould have no real chemistry, and the whole thing is far too noisy. The other characters make the movie.

The original is superb, classic Hitchcock and being made prior to the war has a sense of foreshadowing for what was to come that the remake obviously doesn't :)

As other poster have said its not in the same league as the original, but its enjoyable enough.
The remake of The 39 Steps with Kenneth More is also quite entertaining- it was the one with Robert Powell I didnt much care for.

This is a hacked down version of a review I posted elsewhere several years ago; I think it articulates my thoughts on the subject reasonably well ;) :)
