The Island

Just watched The Island last nght and was moderately impressed (love it when the critics pan a film and it turns out to be ok). Elements of Blade Runner (classic), Matrix, The Truman Show and an 80's body parts film which escapes me. Works well on a surround sound setup too.

Not impressed with Blockbuster though. Adverised as having a 2nd disc of extras (which it didn't) and the film disc looked like a foreign import ie. English language choice was Australian! As long as Sky keep up their

A lot of DVD's have a rental version and a retail version. The rental version will just have the film on it, so you have to buy the DVD to get the extras!! It's really annoying because you never know if it's going to be worth it or not. I usually don't bother unless it was a film for which I was going to buy the DVD anyway.

I also think Blockbuster import their DVD's because it's cheaper. Or something.

if i remember he's always had the pimple, it twas a mosquito bite juts under it which made the area around and the mole swell.
But i know what you mean, i don't think i've seen him on a bike in anyother film.

It's on ITV right now.
First time I've seen it.

Apparently this film had a very mixed reaction on it's release.
Did badly in America but the rest of the world liked it better.

To be honest I'm really enjoying it.
It's just like a proper old school sci-fi action thriller.
Pretty much like those 70s sci-fi movies 'Logan's Run', and 'THX 1138'. Plus a bit of a wink to that hospital conspiracy thriller 'Coma'.

Maybe the problem is that a lot of people find it hard to accept an old school styled film like this. But if you like 70s sci-fi action thrillers then I think you'll really love this.

I can't fault it. Just good pure action sci-fi with a nod and a wink to some 70s classics.
Mind you I like all sorts of culty stuff and tend to like films like this instead of big pretentious conventional Hollywood blockbusters where it's all heavily contrived and market conscious. This also reminRAB me of the old John Carpenter and David Cronenburg sort of stuff, albeit with a much larger Hollywood budget.

It's got that sort of 70s feel, but it also looks great on the eye too.
I think that in 10 years or so time I think that this film will be looked back at with more fondness and be seen as a bit of a cult favourite.
Oh it's got Steve Buscemi in it too, which is never a bad thing.

:)

I went to see this film when it was released in the cinema. I enjoyed it at the time, but then watched it again and really didn't like it. Sorry guys, its just a poor man's Logan's Run to me. Logan's Run might not be as sophisticated, and lacks the effects budget, but it has a charm to it The Island lacks.

I remember it was considered something of a flop when it was released, but I thought it was rather good. Not terribly original or anything, but a perfectly solid film...:)

I thought it was watchable enough, and having Ewan and Sean Bean in the film certainly helped it. Scarlett was a bit of a  though. Lots of lovely product placement too.

It's just a shame my POS PVR decided to chop the last 5-10 mins off the end of the film. I really need to buy a new one.

Incidetally, the other movie you were thinking of is Parts : The Clonus Horror.

It happens to have the distinction of being the first movie I ever rented on DVD way back in the 80's...those pre-internet days when you rented movies based on lurid cover art.

In fact, the director tried to sue the film company for plagiarism when The Island came out.

Don't think he got anywhere, surprise surprise...
