Apparently, according to the directors commentary on the DVD it was deliberately left open in that it could be either.

Personally I don't think you can leave it open without going down the whole route of Eisenheim having genuine supernatural powers, as he really would have had to conjour up her ghost.
 
The way I see it...

They can only be together if they 'disappear', so I figured they must either both die (and be appearing as ghosts) or they must have faked her death and run off together. Would have been happy with either to be honest, but yes, I think she was very much alive and at the end Mr Policeman just managed to put all the pieces together.
 
I saw the film when it came out. i really liked it it had a really good plot to it. And i also saw Max from eastenders i'm gald some else saw him i thought i was seeing things. :)
 
Yes me too. In fact I watched The Prestige first and thought that was also superb...but it kind of gave the plot away in The Illusionist as they are very similar storylines. :)
