I loved this film. I would never have watched it if my friend hadn't owned it and recommended it to me, so I'm thankful she convinced me to watch it. This has now gone on my short dvd purchase list, right up there at the top.

I do! I do! Ed Norton is like the younger Bobby DeNiro, at least for me. I adore him.

Well, with Clerks II they announced that it was coming the day before so I have hope BUT, Clerks only last 2 weeks and since I didn't know I couldn't go.. :(

Ah, I loved this movie. Definitely better than I was originally expecting. And thanks for the quotes! I'm debating whether or not to put one in my signature.

dreamwalker, I totally agree, I saw it a second time and found it interesting to get all the details that I missed the first time, especially already knowing what happens...I still felt myself wanting more, even this time. I so wanted more of biel and norton together...still a really good movie, I hope word of mouth really helps this film! I know Edward Norton's other movie, the pained veil is due out shortly too :)

I have to say that this is one of Jessica Biels best performances! She's getting better with every new role! :)

My guess is that it's in New York [since the premiere was held there] and possibly L.A.

Well it's about time. I remember you mentioning how much you love Norton. :P

Hmm. Well wide release is September 1st. So check back with your theater then.

I saw this last night and wow I loved it.

The movie truly kept me captivated the whole way through. In fact I want to go see it again now. I thought it was beautifully filmed.

Ed Norton was incredible!!! He have a wonderful and captivating performance.

Giamatti as usual didn't disappoint.

Biel was surprisingly good. Not to mention beautiful/luminous onscreen. Her and Norton has surprisingly great chemistry.

mattia - I agree about the depth..........I wanted more. If there had been I think it would have been amazing instead of just teriffic!

Baby Here I am!!

I started school this week so I'm having an odd time getting back on the semester schedule. But here I am.

I must say, everytime I've watched tv I've seen LOTS of promos for this movie. They are on every few commercials and they look good.

Dingbat You've never seen an Ed Norton movie?? That MUST change!

Bad news: I've been checking for the local release date of The Illusionist and I don't think it's coming here at all.... :bawl: I've waited too long for this, now I'll have to wait for the DVD? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

glad that my review could help!!!

Its suppose to be opening wide today!!! I am planning on seeing it again this weekend! I urge everyone to go out and see it...so worth your $10!!! Finally a movie with style and class and edward norton!!! yeah!

anyway, cant wait to hear what other people think!

I love that line of Sophie's too...and then I was waiting for him to make them disappear!...lol ;)

Meh, turns out I'm not seeing it this weekend. The movie's apparently in limited release. So my friends want to see 'Accepted' instead. *sigh*

Wide release is September 1st. Damn.

I agree!

I especially love this one:

Eisenheim: Everything you have seen here has been an illusion and when young Sophie said "make us dissapear" :sigh:

I don't see it playing anywhere around here surprisingly. :( But, I'm sure if I went past my regular theaters I could find a showing........just haven't had a chance to look.

Mattia - Loved reading your review. :)

This is a question which requires a multiple answers:

1) "The Illusionist" is a prime example of how films used to be marketed. That is, they weren't hyped-up before they came out and gradual word-of-mouth, good or bad, is what really sells (or sinks) the film once it is released.

It is funny that when a movie has no huge marketing blitz we now assume the producers want it to fade quickly because it isn't that good... Which is true for a good percentage of films, I.E. Blade Trinity, where Wesley Snipes didn't make a single appearance (radio; TV; print) to promote the film... But it also comes down to just simple economics since TI is actually a low-budget, indepenedent film which was not made by a major studio if you take notice.

2) The second part which flows from number one is the producers are hoping Ed Norton's fanbase -- Along with Jessic Biel, Paul Giamatti and Ruffus Sewel -- Will carry the film because this film is going to be harder to market given it is a period piece and centers on a mix of various genres (romance; mystery; supernatural) instead of more mainstream, easily labeled elements like most big studio films do.

The film is one of those films which may be too "mainstream" for arthouse and indie lovers, but not "mainstream enough" for the general moviegoing public to really embrace as a "must see" film which is what audiences respond to these days (so-called event films), right or wrong.

3) The poster they chose to market this film is completely wrong in my opinion as this is a character study more than a film about magic, or other things.

This is what I meant about the film not being mainstream enough where unknowing audiences will go see the film thinking it is about magic and illusions, but instead is more of a character study grounded in the realism of 1900s Vienna, that has magic and some supernatural elements in it.

.....

Here is a collection of reviews for "The Illusionist" thus far:

REVIEWS

As you can see, they range from average to good... But they aren't great, or outstanding which is the real factor as to why this film may, or may not do that well when all is said and done.

I agree - I hadn't seen any advertising whatsoever until last night. Odd, considering the cast...

Does that mean the creators don't think it's going to be any good so they didn't put money into advertising it?
