The Hub Announces New Original & Acquired Series

To be honest, I thought The Hub was going to be pretty much Hasbro propaganda with the occasional Discovery show. However, this proves that Discovery and Hasbro are going to play hardball and want to make this channel big.

Now, I pray that DirecTV plans on bringing The Hub in HD, since U-Verse already has Discovery Kids in HD. I'm still waiting for DirecTV to finally put ESPNU HD on, a channel that was supposed to be available to DTV back in August.
 
Nicktoons is in HD (according to Wikipedia). TeenNick is not. If you want a list of what is in HD but not on DTV, here's a rough list:

While I do watch Nicktoons a lot, I do want them to finally give DirecTV users what they've specifically promised last year and give us ESPNU HD.
 
That is correct, they launched back in October 2009 (not in my area yet)

An ANN user from Australia chimed in on the DQ announcement, and says DQ got edited, with Ko Otani's BGM being replaced by compositions by a Scottie Morgidon, scenes out of order or removed entirely, and episodes 53-65 are removed from the series (not a big deal because they were largely filler). And of course, the original openings and endings are gone.

The dub's also a Blue Water dub in Calgary. Veteran ADR man Karl Willems (who also directed Death Note and Shakugan no Shana) directed the dub so the acting might be better than an average Blue Water dub. It seems they cast two actual teenagers as the teenage leads so that can either be good or bad depending on the acting and direction.

Not so sure that DQ will be a revolutionary title for The Hub like we thought, it seems to have gotten the SatAM treatment.
 
Who is this "we?" It's an animated series based on a children's book series published by Scholastic domestically. Is it because it was made in Japan that the series' "street cred" got pumped up to 11? That shouldn't take away from the fact that it's a decent series.

I swear, otaku...
 
I have DirecTV. However, when I turn to channel 294, where Discovery Kids is located, I just get a black screen with a blue box at the bottom saying, "Channel not purchased". I guess my parents got a package where we don't get Discovery Kids.

As I said earlier, I'll just hope that some of these shows will get DVD releases, someday.
 
No, I don't like it when scenes are mixed up out of order or the original BGM meant specifically for the show gets replaced. Rurouni Kenshin's BGM didn't get replaced. Neither did Yuyu Hakusho's or any of the Gundams that have aired on TV, or Naruto, for that matter. And I'm dead certain Outlaw Star and Big O had their BGMs intact too.

I don't care about the edits for content unlike a lot of people. Deltora Quest, from what I've seen, isn't all that violent in the first place, but whatever. What bothers me is scenes being taken out of order, and perfectly good and fitting BGM being replaced.

Do I have to accept that, and should kids, when a lot of anime have aired with their scenes in order and with their BGM intact? Or have our standards fallen so far that asking for in-order scenes and original BGM is unreasonable?

If Spider-Man: TAS, Justice League, or Generator Rex (when they feel like it) can air with an orchestral score, why can't Japanese cartoons?

I don't think I'm being an otaku by asking/wishing for that.
 
Personally, I'm going to wait for some clarification. If it is indeed as "macekred" as you say (specifically with the "scenes of out order" report), then I certainly won't be watching it.

In any case, Jeff, I agree with macattack on this one. I don't think that was fair. Yes, Deltora Quest was a western creation originally, but that's just an excuse where this TV show is concerned. The fact is, it was made in Japan, and if they are indeed producing the English version this way, then that would be a major step backwards for everyone (i.e., and not just "otaku").

In any case, all we can do is wait for more info. Besides which, this isn't the place to talk about anime editing vs. not editing, especially since there are also other Hub shows to talk about.

It's just that people were thinking that just because it was from Japan, Deltora Quest was going to be this genre-shifting, revolutionary series above everything else on the network. It's a cartoon.

It's not even guaranteed we're even going to get this version in the US. Aussie standards are different than North American standards. Perhaps there's a music rights issue that wasn't cleared for the English adaptation. Or maybe the show's distributors are just cheap. Maybe Cartoon Network just got a bad copy of the series. Who knows?

I have nothing against the fact that it's from Japan. I'm just sick of the ridiculously-high standard and "better than Western animation" mentality the otaku fringe has on Japanese animation. It's a cartoon, an animated series based on a children's book series published by Scholastic domestically. Nothing revolutionary about it.

Don't really care about that site, because all my DirecTV news comes from DBSTalk.com. However, thank you about DTV12 actually going live and that ESPNU HD, Travel HD (my dad really wanted that channel), and three others are active. Hadn't paid attention since I've been playing Split/Second all day and kept the TV on good ol' ESPN HD.

Nope, Hasbro Studios is Hasbro Studios and owned by Hasbro. Sony Animation still exists and is still owned by Sony, not Hasbro.

Hasbro Studios is venturing into filmed entertainment now more than they ever had before, and not just in animation, but in all mediums. Considering they're owned by one of the biggest toymakers in the world and has a lot of properties they could easily adapt for multiple platforms, Hasbro Studios is just getting started, and The Hub will be their coming out party of sorts.
 
I realize that Jeff, but I haven't seen a single person, from the head of Hasbro Studios all the way down to the storyboard artists, who hadn't worked on Sony's animated productions going all the way back to 1997.

Is it Sony? No, but it may as well be.
 
The thing is Hasbro goes back before 1997. Previously they have just hired out other studios to work with the animation. Now they are actually taking control of all their properties. Hasbro's earliest successes are obviously G1 and GI Joe, but you can't forget other shows that Sony had no involvement in that Hasbro did like Duel Masters and Idaten Jump. Yes, many of the recent Hasbro projects haven't been very successful (GI Joe Sigma 6 being one of them). With them actually exhibiting full control of their series now though, then you can say Hasbro will make or break themselves.
