The House By The Cemetery tonight Film 4 12.40

Film4 seems to have a late-night horror double bill theme going on this week.

Surprising both that this screening has been coupled with the TV premiere of Donkey Punch, and that they've chosen to show this particular Fulci film when it was the last one of his 'zombie' films to have got through the BBFC uncut - only back in February this year, after many years of trying. It's almost as if they were deliberately trying to stoke the fires of the Daily Mail, what with their furore over Donkey Punch last year, being combined with the firepoker/tit-skewering nastiness of Fulci's little epic.

Just watched it, now it's daylight and the curtains are over. ;)

Not sure what to make of it. But you can tell it was defo made 30 years ago. :D

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but murders take ages, from start to finish. :D

It's a while since I last saw HBTC but I don't recall tit skewering in this one.

The far nastier tit / nipple and razor sequence in his next film The New York Ripper is still censored in the UK today

Never seen it before until now.Classic Fulci - all style and little substance. But not a bad thing as most modern horror movies (actually most studio ones for that matter) have no style and little substance.

Nobody makes them like that anymore, but then they have dated considerably in one way or other. Most will hate movies like that unless they are fans of strange horror or art house lovers.

I feel the terrible dubbing actually adRAB to what makes these movies work - they are basically a nightmare put on film.

We wants plenty of blood, plenty of guts, plenty of scares, plenty of tits and we want our heroes to be dubbed! Thats what we want in a horror film.

This looks like yet another crappy Italian horror: horrible dubbing, stupid story, amateurish f/x and woeful acting. And that's after just 10 minutes. Is it worth carrying on?
How have Argento and Fulci got away with this stuff for so long?

Was that a Fulci zombie movie in which a boy tries to molest his mother and his mother is willing!?

Think the character was called Peter, but he was really a man, not a kid. Weird looking as well...

Anyone know the film?

Personally, to maintain happy memories I prefer to pretend his career ended with Opera :(

Two Evil Eyes (or more accurately his 'one evil eye'), Trauma and The Stendahl Syndrome were just too much of a digression for me to invest further in his career after that point. I've heard so many mixed reviews of Sleepless though that I will give it a go someday.

Well Argento was always one who was in it for the show rather than intellectual stimulation, and his films work if you just liken them to looking at a painting that moves.

Fulci as all about mutilation and maggots, and a bit lower than Argento in the pecking order.

In Fulci's films the mutilation becomes an art form in itself! You're right on the maggots though - I know the 'human condition' is disgusting without needing to see quite such a gloopy, visceral metaphor for it.

But have you seen any of Fulci's earlier 'giallo' thrillers? A Lizard In A Woman's Skin gives anything from Argento's early career a run for its money in the style stakes.

Could depend on which version you saw it in - the previous UK versions had the whole scene completely removed. The grisly fate befalls the estate agent who sells the family the eponymous house - she gets in either one or both norks before the poker is plunged into her neck, resulting in a spectacularly bloody 'ejaculation' when it is withdrawn. Thinking about it, it seems really rather obscene. :p

Quite why she needed to go there alone during the day when the house was empty I can't recall, but then Fulci never was bothered with expending much time/logic in getting people into situations where the much more important purpose was for them to be splatted in loving and lingering detail. :)

Is the version that Film4's showing subtitled or dubbed? I've added it to my planner (it's on again on Wednesday night/Thursday morning at 12:50), but if it's dubbed i might not bother...dubs are ALWAYS sh*t.
