The Hobbit

Yes, very true, my guess is that there will be plenty of revisionism, just as there was with LoTR. However the good thing is that it probably won't matter quite so much with The Hobbit.

Does anyone know if the various parties who own the film rights to The Hobbit, have come to any agreement yet.
If so, when is it expected to go into production and will Peter Jackson be directing?

oh there was a thread on here not so long ago about them getting a different director other than Peter J. there was an onlone petition for him to do it and noone else and everything.

maybe if you searched this fourm...

The likely outcome seems to be that NL will get to go ahead with this film while they still have the production rights, with probably Sam Raimi as the director, PJ producing and Weta doing the FX. This should mean that all the parties involved in the LotR films i.e. actors, composer, conceptual artists etc... that made it such a success will be happy to be involved. I actually think PJ not directing would be good. The Hobbit is such a different book to LotR that a different director will make the film version sufficiently different too. I'm not suggesting PJ couldn't do the book justice, but it would be good to see someone else's take on Middle Earth. Don't expect to see it before Xmas 2010 at the earliest, though.

Well I expect the Battle of Five Armies will take up half of a film all by itself. Then there numerous are side plots that can be developed, such as driving the Necromancer out of Dol Guldur. They'll probably make up a lot that isn't in the book too .

I've just read an article posted overnight on Entertainment Weekly that says The Hobbit will make up the bulk of film 1, while the second will be filling in the back story and events leading up to "The Fellowship".

However it works out this is great news, though those early reports of Sam Raimi directing still seem to be there which I'm not especially keen on, I would much rather Alfonso Cuaron or Guillermo Del Toro directed (both mooted by EW).

The important thing is that Pete, Fran and Pippa should be in charge of the script, with Pete and Fran overseeing the whole project.

That should see the Hobbit dovetail nicely into LOTR, no matter who directs (within reason).

More important than Jackson, imho, is that they get Mckellen back to play Gandalf.

My fear with Jackson is that he'll make Bard, who will speak with an American accent, the lead character who virtually single handedly saves the day in a two hour battle before defeating Smaug on his own and being crowned King.

I want a director who will more accurately represent Tolkien.

I'm rather downhearted to discover that PJ will not be producing at all, but will in fact be executive producer. This is a much less "hanRAB-on" role, and is often little more than a creative rubber stamp and namecheck.

Hmmm....

What will Peter Jackson's role be as producer?
I thought producers were basically the chief administrators of a film and had little artistic input :(

I think it's essential that the Hobbit has the same 'feel' and style as LOTR.

I would love to see Joe McFadden as Bilbo - with a bit of artistic licence he could keep his Scottish accent too. After all, Pippin was a Scot, and Bilbo had a strong Tookish side. But he could play it without the accent too.

They definitely need a young actor, in the same way that they made Frodo young. Ian Holm was a great Bilbo, but the main stars of LOTR were generally young.

I read too that as someone else said that the 2nd film will fill in the blanks but be chiefly drawn from the apendices of Tolkien and his various references to Middle Earth history!

Hope Christopher Lee will be back as Saruman as well. I'm guessing we're going to see the wizarRAB council that was referenced in the Hobbit and the appendices.

I'd also like to see a pro-log of the arrival of the Istari (WizarRAB) in Middle Earth, how there mission was to combat Sauron.

Maybe see some of Gandalf's journeys, and how Saruman came to live in Isengard.

I dont mind Bilbo being recast, after all this would be a younger Bilbo, but the characters that overflow, Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond need to be the same. If they can get Andy Sircus back to do Gollum thats great as well

If they can have more of the LOTR cast in, then I wouldn't have a problem with say Legolas being in the Elf Kings halls in Mirkwood and even fighting in the Battle of Five Armies. Theres nothing to say he wasn't there, in fact it would be strange if he was not there.

Whats most exciting about this to me is the visuals and the locations. How cool is it going to be to see Laketown, the ruined Dale and the Lonely Mountain? And of course Smaug himself!

I think you will find that this rumour has already been denied by Peter Jackson. Hope so, daft idea really as people spend too much time with clever shots showing 3D which are stomach churning rather than what we need to see.

Looks like Guillermo Del Toro is in talks to direct the two films. I think he'd be a great choice, Pan's Labyrinth was incredible.

I still want to see him do At The Mountains Of Madness though and I guess this would delay that again.

Here's the link.
