"The Hobbit" - Director Guillermo del Toro drops out

The film won't happen until MGM - which is close to bankruptcy, has 3 billion dollar debt - is sold off or gone into liquidation. MGM has a stake in the Hobbit rights. At the moment the studio is getting endless credit extensions so it's still going. It's more or less dead, just on life-support!

The new James Bond film has been indefinitely delayed too due to MGM being unable to fund future films. Like the Hobbit, MGM has the rights to make Bond films. The new Hobbit film may not happen for a few years. It's possible Guillermo del Toro can return to the project at a later date, in a few years time, but he may have moved on with his career or lost interest in making it.

You can forget about any director, the film won't happen while MGM is still in operation. It's a dead project. Here's a post on that link:

Damn shame. Quicker MGM is put out of its misery and these movies can be moved to studios that are still viable maybe they will be made. Longer MGM sits on these franchises without them being made surely the less chance the studio can use these as a launch pad to bounce back towarRAB profit.
 
MGM will be bought out sooner rather than later,theres a few franchises any film company would kill to get their hanRAB on,such as the Bond films,perhaps someone like Fox will buy it(they already distribute their DVRAB and Blurays so its not that far out of the realms of reality)
 
The court battle with the Tolkien Estate which almost led to the movie not being made, the silence over lots of details such as casting etc, and the major delays in release dates. This film won't happen form a while, maybe it will never get released, at least in it's current form.
 
Damn language filter on here will prevent me getting across my true feelings about his departure. Pan's Labyrinth is proof posiive he would work wonders on it.

Anyway, Peter Jackson may return from his smaller, close to his heart films phase and come back to the huge epics once the mess has been cleared up.
