Reported on Empire online that MGM have indicated they will be bringing The Hobbit to the screen. Hopfully Peter Jackson will be back and almost certainly Ian McKellan will be too.

Although he was in the trillogy I hope John Rhy Davis comes back as one of the dwarfs. He is ace!

Peter Jackson says he hasn't talked to anyone about Hobbit at the moment, although he'd like to do it (it's fitting it in that could be an issue).

Nope, New Line have the rights to make it, but not distribute it. Bizarrely MGM have distribution rights... That's always been the trouble with the Hobbit, it relies on 2 studios partnering up to get the film made. Jackson has always maintained he wants to do it, however, his schedule is getting pretty packed at the moment! Currently is directing and/or producing a Dam Busters remake, The Lovely Bones , Halo (producer only) and he's just announced Temeraire... busy guy!

In a way I hope that Jackson doesn't direct it. He did OK with LOTR, but he bent the story a lot to his own vision and that ruined it a bit for me, being a big fan of the book and all.

I hope Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are involved. My impression is that Jackson kept trying to turn TLOTR into a monster movie and generally messed it around, and they kept trying to keep him on the straight and narrow. They are the real Tolkien experts.
