The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Those Orange adverts are quite funny, but getting annoying (espeically after seeing them 397540391 times!)

True about the cast - Why was this girl American? She wanted to get away, so if she was an American in England, surely she's 'away'? lol..

i havent read the original books, or seen the tv shows.

However i may be seeing this movie tomorrow

Should i be reading up on anything, in order to get the most out of my ticket money? I have heard that going in cold makes for a confusing experience

DillholeMcGinty - You won't have time to gen up. Just enjoy the film as best you can. It's not unwatchable, and I guess being uninitiated, you may get more out of it than I did. Then get hold of the BBC CRAB of the radio series and be prepared to be amazed at how good the film could have been!

Douglas himself wrote the screenplay, and it was just tweeked and polished off after he died. So Douglas invented the new characters and the POV gun.
He also said that every incarnation of Hitchhiker's is different. Would you be bored eventually if the radio, book, game, towel, movie followed the EXACT same plot?

I loved the movie and the ending was wacky, but perfect. (Marvin with the POV Gun)

If you're not new to the guide I'd recommend a second viewing as you can get over the "hey that wasn't there" "how's this bit in it" stuff. If you are familliar to the guide's previous incarnations you probably will enjoy a second viewing much more. I know I did.

That does put into a different perspective :) . I wasn't too sure what was 'DNA new' and what was written by others after he had gone. It did have its moments but overall it wasn't a patch on its other incarnations (well not for me anyway  ) For me it was more of 'A HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy' and not 'The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy'

They are re running the series on bbc, and i want to see it, but i can't remember which bbc channel or what time they said.

I'll go see the film and make my own mind up on it.

I really, really wanted to love this film, but I hated it. The books were superb (I admit I've never listened to the radio version), but the sarcastic satrical humour was completely missing from the film, to be replaced by brain dead slapstick.

Ford was pointless, Zaphod an imbecile, Trillian really didn't seem that bright, and Arthur lusting after someone he met only once drove me nuts. Don't even get me started on Marvin, he could have been excellent with the voice of Alan Rickman but was a huge let down.

I'm off to order the tv series from Play.

Hello all, just watched the film last night and as a long time fan of the radio/ books and tv series, I too was somewhat disapointed, in that 'Hollywoodising' it:
1. Dumbed down the humour.
2. Added the inevitable and unecessary 'love interest' story.

However I really enjoyed Bill Bailey's portrayal of Slartibartfast and thought the Vogon costumers were great.

Oh, and I agree about the guide - when I first saw it, I thought they had done it with bits a cardboard!
