them to buy our property? is there a law by ways of making the authority purchase our house if a proposed widening of a road at the bottom of the garden goes ahead
It would mean the loss of at half of our garden and would make life unbearable and the property would drop in value.
 
Sorry, but that's not the way it works. The municipality/county only needs to pay you 'fair market value' for any portion of your property which it needs to widen the roadway. You end up with the remainder. The authority will obtain a professional appraisal of that portion of your property and will make you an offer, which you can accept or reject. However, if you cannot reach agreement, it will proceed under 'eminent domain' and will TAKE the property from you.
