5-year-old sister. Gunman kills 9 ..? ... during school rampage. Man imprisons daughter for 24 years! etc.

Everyday, it's the same thing. Bad news, everywhere.

Unbelievable violence across the globe. A terrifying economic outlook. Wars. Corruption. Floods. Tornadoes. Wild weather.

And a shocking local incident: Not two weeks ago, my neighbor was killed after dousing himself with gasoline in an attempt to hold policemen at bay during a domestic disturbance. The officer at the scene used his taser. My neighbor burst into flames, and later died in a Pittsburgh hospital. He was 24 years old.

Is it just me - I'm noticing these instances more? Or has the world really become such an inhospitable place?

What might be causing this?

Is it better media coverage? Or, attention seeking due to the media coverage these acts receive?

A society without morals? Rampant drug use? Overworked families? Not knowing (and therefore, not really caring about) your neighbors?

Your thoughts?

And what can we -- together or individually -- do to change it?

Also, might you happen to have a feel-good story to share? One that will bring a smile to the face of those who read this? Something amusing (or inspiring) that a child has done would be perfect.

Why? Because children are our future.

We could all use a ray of sunshine. Looking forward to reading your answers.

I'm so sorry about your mother, and hope that she makes a full recovery. She'll be in my thoughts. Your husband sounds like a keeper.

Franz Johannsen (sp?) Any news on this lovely gentleman?

As others have said, news is everywhere, and bad news sells best.

The nasty incident you related has more to do with the lack of IQ testing in police entrance exams.

A while ago I had occasion to look through some old newspapers from 100 years ago. Apart from the wars, disease, bigotry and grinding poverty that people suffered then there were some unpleasant incidents that would not look out of place in today's news, there was a case of one boy shooting another dead in a game of "hunt the Boer" (no, not a typo), and a homeless man who burned to death trapped under an oil tank.
Personally, I'd much rather be alive today than in 1909.

there certainly is reason to believe that the world is getting worse and that evil is on the increase -- in spite of our many scientific and technological advances.

Take the record of the last century, for example: two world wars and other conflicts that killed more people than all previous wars combined; 6 million Jews mercilessly killed in the Holocaust; millions more innocent civilians slaughtered by evil atheistic despots; more Christians martyred for their faith than at any other time in history. Or think of the violence and death we have seen in the last few years through senseless acts of terrorism and devastating natural disasters.

This has led many Bible scholars to conclude that we could be living in the last days before Christ's return. The Apostle Paul wrote, "There will be terrible times in the last days. ... Evil men and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived" (2 Timothy 3:1, 13). Jesus declared that we "will hear of wars and rumors of wars. ... Nation will rise against nation" (Matthew 24:6-7).

Why will it be like this? The reason, the Bible says, is because just before Christ returns Satan will lash out in one final burst of fury, seeking with all his might to block Christ's victory. Does this alarm you? Don't let it -- because Christ, not Satan, will be victorious. In the meantime, put your faith in Christ, and "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer" (Romans 12:12).

media coverage and good news doesn't provide them with sales targets.
Good news, there is some but not necessarily on major scales, for instance more children than ever are getting involved in charity work. More children and teenagers than ever are becoming interested in the ecology issues of our planet. Most children can achieve more academically than they did depending on the type of teachers they have, and so on, but there are bad teachers and bad parents and much authority bullying power in schools and social services and the media stirring it up. I think one page of each news paper issued should be compulsorily made to contain at least 3 largish items of good news, may be that would feed the feel good factor and give kids a boost instead of helping to put them down all the time. I say this because when I was young all the moans and groans about us made us youngsters made us feel aggressive even if we controlled it and it has spread because of the media hype.
