The Grudge

I've had this on dvd for ages. I decided to watch it tonight, but was really dissapointed. I heard quite a few good things about it, but it was complete rubbish.

I thought the story itself was hard to follow and too complicated. It also seemed as if they tried to make every single scene scary. For example, a girl would hear a noise in the house, and she'd suddenly start creeping about. Then the phone would ring and she'd crap herself. I didn't find it very scary at all.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this film?

What a waste of some acting talent for Sarah Michelle Gellar tho.Not a patch on Buffy ,what on earth possessed her to do this film is beyond me, thought it was a load of rubbish.

Are you talking about the US version? I thought it was quite good and actually better in parts than the Japanese cinema version.

What was very scary, though, was the fact that the vengeful ghosts did not stay in one place. Normally in ghost stories, the spooks are confined to one house - as soon as you leave the house, you're safe (Amityville, Poltergeist etc.).

Not so with the Grudge - you're not safe at work in the office, at home in the shower or even in bed.

I didn't find the story complicated at all - you just need to realise that the scenes move around in time - it's not a linear narrative.

I don't really think that she's a bad actress, it's just that in this film, she was exactly the same as she was in Buffy. There was no difference at all. But then again, this was a horror film, and there wasn't really much she could do with her character in The Grudge.

This is one of those DVD's where on first watch its creepy and scary (cause your not quite sure what to expect yet you know its a horror) but on 2nd/further watch you think "what the hell was ever creepy about that". It has a re-watch value of zero in my opinion so I kinda regret buying it

The original and remake are both rather ordinary, but the original wins with me for the creepy atmosphere and scenes. Remake was just another pointless movie to add to the list.

I prefered the original Ju On sequel, and yet to see the third one though.(not counting the other unofficial version of 1 and 2)

Thought it was ok, I think SMG did it because I think she wants to be the 21st century Scream Queen like Jamie Lee was last century but she just aint that good an actress so has no chance.

I really liked this film. There were some scenes which were a bit rubbish - like when SMG first sees the woman with the hair in the room - but overall, I found it quite creepy. It's the bit where the sister is in her apartment building going up in the lift and you can see him...creeps me out no end.
