The Grudge - was it just me or a diabolical film

i've just finished watching the grudge on DVD, what a truly awful film.

Was it just me or a pitiful storyline, no interesting characters, a really sublime way of filming and enough to send you to sleep.

I had to force myself to watch the end just to see what was going on and was left very dissapointed.
 
probably not actually, i'm trying to say the director seemed to be trying to give a dark, nauseus look but it just looked like they spent too long trying and not concentrating on the story.
 
I love it!! I agree that the story isn't great but scared the bejeezes out of me all the same! I watched it twice in a row last night, we'd just finished watching it when my sister came home, pissed as a fart and insisted on watching it - and spent most of the film covering her eyes anyway.

But then again, perhaps im easily pleased........!
 
I was not impressed either. Complete waste of time. Unfortunately I have not seen the original Japanese movie. I think the Japanese are probably the masters of psycho horror (in my opinion of course !). American remakes are complete rubbish most of the time.
 
I really enjoyed it. It was the first film in years that actualy got the hairs on the back of my neck going!

Also, to point out, the "american remake" was better than any other conversian. For a start they used the same Japenese director of the original. They also used Japenese actors and Japan as the location.

As a special bonus, Sam Rami produces.

I think the US version was just a way for the original director to have another look at the story aswell as having access to more money.
 
I've only seen the Japanese original and I'm in two minRAB about it.

I agree that it had many glaring weaknesses: the plot was very formulaic but at the same time difficult to follow (it actually felt as though I was watching a sequel there was so much that was left unexplained); the characters were two-dimensional and the 'haunted house' itself was just about the most uninspiring film location ever (my own house would have been far more atmospheric). Added to all this there were lots of continuity and plot mistakes (why did the social worker turn up at the house at midnight and ignore all that police tape?)

But the film works one vital area in that it is very, very, VERY scary. As I mentioned in a previous thread, I damn near shat myself watching this film
and seriously considered sleeping with the lights onafterwarRAB. :o

Yes, this some areas of this film's production border on the criminally negligent - but don't watch it alone :eek:
 
The first post is spot on (except using 'sublime' ;) ). The American's remaking these films don't have a clue about atmosphere and suspense, and thats what the japanese horror film is built on.

Along with a complete ability to suspend disbelief (is that correct? Y'know, give in to the ideas of a film), which the American filmmakers seem to struggle with. We don't even bother on the whole. ;)

Really depenRAB on what you expect, I expected utter crap and left the cinema rather pleased at getting a decent, albeit not great, movie...

And it genuinely did create a "scary" atmosphere at times, that much credit you have to give it.

Oh, and Sarah Michelle Gellar is an astonoshingly good actress, not really fair to judge her ability based on this...

The Grudge 2 is most likely gonna happen given that the film was phenomenal success considering it had a mini $10m budget...

My only problem was that it was too "Ring"ey, hopefully if they do make a sequel they manage to make it distinct...

That said, anyone seen the impressive Ring 2 trailer?
