the growth of my fish is slow?

they are about 1" each
i have a 55 gallon aquarium with 28 Australian natives, i was wondering if this would be the cause of there slow growth, theres so many of them? i also know they don't grow to big so maybe it takes more time, i try to feed them as much as possible without overcrowding the tank.
ok lets get this straight im not overfeeding them and they are threadfin's so 28 will be fine. my main question was do you think EACH of them is getting enough food at feeding time, i understand that they have small stomachs and i do not overfeed them but do you think each of them gets enough food? and maybe THIS is why they grow slower. thankyou
 
Feeding them "as much as possible" is overfeeding them. You should only be feeding them what their stomachs can handle, and for fish, their stomachs are only about as big as one of their eyes.

I don't know what you mean by "Australian native fish" as you didn't specify the type, but I'm assuming that a 55g is too small based on my search on Google.

If you want your fish to grow properly, you should be feeding them normally with pellets or flakes daily, with an added treat once a week of either live, freeze-dried or frozen brine shrimp or blood worms. To ensure that their digestive system is working properly, you should fast them for one day a week, preferably after you feed them pure protein.

sarah is right, DO NOT feed them as much as possible. overfeeding is actually worse than underfeeding in the case of fish, which could be a reason they aren't growing well, also 28 fish in a 55 gal tank seems like too much- make sure you have the proper filtration, etc. because illness can not only spread easily, but is more likely the more waste there is in the tank. nasty bacteria and algae can grow rampantly if the there is over crowding, too much food, and poor water quality, which can all contribute to your fish not growing.
