So what would be generaly considered by fans to be the greatest anime of all time?? Or in other worRAB, what's the Muhammad Ali/Rocky Marciano of anime?

IM not sure it this is somthing that can be answered without alot of arguing...I mean if you mean overall the anime property that sold the most Worldwide & is well known one could say either The Pokemon or Dragonball Series...But if you mean Best anime of all time in the Persons personal openion....Well thats just asking for a brawl...Tha Fact of it is theres no such thing...Plus Its Far to difficult to Decide somthing like that...But if I have to I think one anime series that deserves praise, from a Artistic & storytelling standpoint at least...is....Eureka Seven!

Spirited Away. Most money in Japan, Oscar in America, ridiculously high Metacritic/Rotten Tomatoes rankings, and the movie itself is actually a masterpiece deserving of all this.

greatest anime of all time....... Pokemon

got plenty of time on TV
plenty of movies
brainwashed the minRAB of young children

yea Pokemon

(however ... ill throw out Haibane Renmei as being the greatest lesser known anime of all time)

best=/=most popular or financially profitable.

I don't think this can really be resolved. One might have more luck with "most culturally important" or "most critically acclaimed" etc, but best is so subjective.

'Bout time someone mentioned Reign the Conqueror

Ok, let's see aside from Reign the Conqueror and DRAGONBALL
Outlaw Star
Gunbuster/Diebuster
VOTOMS
MAZE: The Megaburst Space
Magic Knight Rayearth
Slayers
Ranma 1/2
Gundam
Patlabor
Dirty Pair
Mezzo
Kite
Devil Hunter Yohko
Tenchi Muyo!

and numerous others

Honestly, anything by Mitsuru Adachi deserves a mention, TOUCH is probably my least favourite of his works, but everything else he's written is epic!!

This question will always spark debate, but there has already been one thread like this:
rabroad's Top 25 of Anime, 2004 edition

Also, here are two more lists from two American anime magazines:
Newtype USA's Top 25 of Anime, 2004 edition
Anime Insider's Top 50 of Anime, 2007 edition

I agree with rabroad and Anime Insider more, since they both list Cowboy Bebop as the greatest, but I also agree with Newtype USA, since it lists it as the second greatest, after Neon Genesis Evangelion. Overall, Anime Insider is the one I agree with most.

My personal top 10 list is:
1. Cowboy Bebop
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
3. Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal
4. FLCL
5. Samurai Champloo
6. Gurren Lagann
7. Porco Rosso (and any other movie by Hayao Miyazaki)
8. Fullmetal Alchemist
9. Millennium Actress (and any other movie by Satoshi Kon)
10. Code Geass

Of course, it could always be argued that any anime considered the greatest could just be popular at the time, or that when it was declared the greatest, one greater had yet to come out. However, Cowboy Bebop has been considered one of, usually the nuraber one, greatest anime of all time for the past decade, so it's hard to argue that point in this case. But, more importantly, calling any anime the "greatest" will always result in someone arguing against it... *coughcowboybebopisthegreatestanimeofalltimecough* Ahem, excuse me, I seem to have a cold.
