The Great Steak Debate.....HELP!!?

I went out to dinner with my girl and we both ordered steaks. When asked how we wanted them prepared, I, as usual order it medium. But my girl ordered hers well done.:-O Then when we got our dinners she put ketchup on it. I was completely aghast that she did this to a NY Strip. One of the finest pieces of meat you can get from a cow and IMO was completely ruined by being totally charred. and then smothered in ketchup. And on top of that she didn't even finish half of it because she said it was too tough. DUH!!! My question is does anyone have a logical explanation for doing this? Because this is just a waste of food to me. It's like eating mayonnaise on a peanut butter sandwich in my eyes. Why? I would love to hear some of your experiences with this.
 
I went to dinner and was shocked when the person on the next table did the same thing up until the actual eating. When he cut into it, there was the tiniest ribbon of pink in the thick part of it (as i heard from the waiter who was a mate of mine). at this point he sent the whole meal back and left without paying. Personally i prefer a good steak to be cooked almost blue.
to explain this most disgusting of phenomena, there are a few possibilities. perhaps this is the way her parents or friends ordered their steak and she simply followed suit. maybe she doesn't like any pink in her steak. or maybe, as is the case with many people, she doesn't know steak paricularly well.
