The Golden Compass Thread-Dec. 7,2007

I heard that this film is really horrible. Well, I was never interested in it in the first place.

Great trailer!

btw, everyone on the official movie site, you can take a short quiz and they give you a daemon that fits your personality. i got a tiger :-D

I saw the movie today...I did enjoy it and it was great seeing things come to life on the big screen although it's nowhere near as good as the book (but how could it be?!) I liked the way Lyra's world was brought to life and I thought overall they did a good job of condensing the book into the film.

I was disappointed by the end just because I was expecting it to properly finish the book but I can see why they chose to end it there...although for me it felt a bit of an anti-climax.

I thought the performances were generally good but wasn't totally convinced by Lyra, I always feel horrible criticising young actors but I'm not sure she had quite enough presence on screen, she was fine but didn't stand out to me.

Overall I enjoyed it but I felt it was missing some magic...whereas the books stand out from the crowd, the movie doesn't. But that's not to say it's bad and I'd definitely see the second film if it's made and I do hope it is.

Saw this a couple days ago. Found it quite odd.

Hey, have you guys seen the extended, final trailer? OMG it's pretty much the best trailer I have ever seen. No kidding, it's AMAZING and I cannot cannot cannot wait!! Here you go, definitely check it out and share it! ?nod:

But will the second be made. That's the ultimate question. I suspect that if they decide not to go ahead, they'll put Roger's death scene on the DVD.

It's too bad they didn't film all 3 at once. I know it's only been done with LotR. But knowing how this entire series takes place with a span of a year and Lyra is 11 when it starts. The young actress is going to grow up quick and it will seem less believeable.

Jason Issacs would have been good in the role too.

I always pictured Lyra as a dirty little kid with no regard for her appearance. I wondered about Will too, for a minute there  I love Will.

I hope they dont screw up the story...Narnia might not have been perfect but it was a million times better than Eragon. That was dreadful...oh god I hope they dont ruin it.

I saw this last night. I recently discovered the books and love them.

I was really disappointed in the movie, however, they changed the ending... or.. didn't finish it.

Bumping this up :)

I wont be able to see it for another week or so. I see its starting to cause controversy...big surprise there..."religon, blah blah blah"..I get so sick of it. I see the "lets ban the books from the library" approach has started as well.

Nothing will make something more popular than banning it, dont they know that? Sheesh.

Kat! I'm not the only one! Most people loved the adaptation of Narnia, so yes.

Well Lyra doesn't look too young to me, but she looks too clean. I always imagined her as a thin, grubby kid - Dakota Richards looks too clean and cute  Nicole Kidman looks alright, Daniel Craig I don't know. I like him well enough, but he just seems odd. Eva Green as Serafina Pekkala looks okay, though. It's hard to say because I never really imagined how they'd look like when I read the series.

The first time I saw the cast photos, I thought to msyelf, 'Where's Will?' before I realised this is the first one and therefore has no Will yet

the hair did confuse me because it's black..I'm sure she could've dyed it and looked just as good..?? Lord Asriel was cast well though ;)

No idea why they changed Iofur's name..maybe they thought that+Iorek would get confused easily..

I am almost or around halfway done with Amber Spyglass! :D I found a load of good GC art too, anyone want a link?

I'm not a huge fan of Nicole Kidman anyways..but I totally agree about the hair

Actually the director didn't want to end with Roger's death so he created a cliffhangerish movie to set up for sequels so the second one will open with the ending of the first book presumably.

I can't believe they changed the name of the first book lol. Ah well, I hope this movie is good I'm not sure all its depth is going to transfer all that well to the screen but it will be an enjoyable film nonetheless.

I am so excited for this movie...I LOVED the series. Definately have to read it again in time for the movie!

Im not too sure about Nicole Kidman...but damn, Daniel Craig will make up for it. I love him :)

Thanks wildatheart, I went on the site, and my daemon is a jackal! Sigh, it would be so fun to have a daemon outside of my body...

The books are very emotional. I always end up crying when i finish the series

I reccommend reading them..but..I'm terrifed they are going to butcher the books  So sometimes its best to go in with no idea about the books, no "They HAVE to have this..and that..". I mean, look at Harry Potter..everyone is always disappointed about something in the movies  I know I am, anyways

Gwen, I didn't like the Narnia adaptation at all. But LOTR was so good so hopefully this will follow in that tradition.

I know what you mean about the kid's ages. With Lyra especially I think I imagine her as older than she should be.

What do you guys think of the casting? And should Nicole have dyed her hair?

Mine was a SPIDER, ugh. I can't remember its name because I took that quiz awhile ago. Did you guys see that there are new character posters? Here's a link:
