Iv'e just been looking into this and it's got me interested. Now i'm not really much of a fantasy person but I missed out on LOTR and Harry Potter so i'd like to get into this. I've read that there is going to be 3 films to this, is that true? Also there are 3 books out so would I need to read the books before I watch these films?

They'll probably see how the first film does before green-lighting the other two...

And yes, theres three books,

Northern Lights
The subtle knife
The amber Spyglass

I would read the books, as they give a very different slant on it than what I expect the films will.

It's a lot more deeper and complex than Harry Potter though.

It would be constructive to read the books before you see the films. To appreciate the 'true' story before the film makers having to change things.

I disagree. The reviews I've read haven't been too favourable because they've all compared the film to the book. Let's be honest, not many films based on a book manage to create the same 'feel' as the book...I would like to see the film judged on it's own merits, without the need to judge it against the source material.....if it's good, it's good.....if it's bad, it's bad........leave the book out of it, which should be judged seperately to the film...

I'm not interested in the books but will still watch the film(s), much like I did with LOTR.

I would tend to agree with you, however there are some book/film conversions that bare scrutiny. LOTR being one that most people will know, did fairly well at conveying the whole story. Where as the David Lynch version of Dune, really only gave the gist of the book to the viewer. It missed out whole chunks of the story, to fit it into the film format.

i have heard they have done a good job of condensing the books down.

this one also enRAB with a cliff hanger so assume will be another film.

How well did the film end? They cut out the actual ending of the book and moving it onto "the subtle knife". Is the ending effective? The book ending was amazing, they should have kept it in.

problems with this film were the ending was totally different from the book. Also some scenes were the wrong way round for instance the fight between the bear king and byson was before the scene where all the children are rescued.

In the film it shows lord arisel been kidnapped buy men but in the book it the ice bears that have him captured and scenes in the trailer wren't even in the film and theres a lot more in this film that is completely wrong it worse than eragon for not following the damn book.

to me it seems only peter jackson has ever followed a book. he did a great job on lord of the rings.

if you've never read the book you'll enjoy this film but if you've read the book you feel hollywood has made a bad movie by not following the book.

I'll put it in spoiler tags but its just the ending of the film - nothing else -

My first thought when the film ended was kind of "Oh my God its finished". I wanted more. I knew it was a trilogy of books but thought all the stories would be fairly seperate from each other. It WAS effective though, with them sailing off into the night, and is such a cliffhanger for someone who hasn't read the books like me.

I went to see the film today and i thought it was good!! :) :)
Nicole Kidman is well ace, i havent seen any James Bond films but i thought Daniel Craig was brill...he's good looking too!!!!! lmao!!
I enjoyed the film, i havent read the book so some parts i didnt understand but i asked about it and i understand it now!! I would advise people to go and see it!! :)

got to disagree with first part of that sorry, he also missed out fairly large chunks of the book and some things didn't quite follow, also the ending of the second and the start of the third, sort of overlapped in terms of the books endings.

But I do agree with you when you say he did a great job! some of the best films ever in their own right, regardless of the books.

I always find it strange how people always seem suprised that films don't follow the book, unless the book was 100 pages long or the film 6 hours, this is never going to happen. It must be such an unrewarding job having to convert a book into a film script as your always going to have to miss out some fans favourite bits.

Im dreading the 7th Harry Potter film, the film is going to have to cut the book to shreaRAB and people are going to complain.
