The golden compass - Evil?

I have read all three books which is an awsome story.
Now about the religeous stuff the people who are getting on there hi horse's about this film need to concentrate on the real world where real bad things are happening every day. Not this story which is a bit of escapeism for people like myself & many others like me who just want a bit of entertainment.

This is the Harry Potter and De Vinci Code all over again . The catholic church has condemed all three pieces of work and IMO I don't think that they have even bothered to read them. You would think that after all this time they would relises that the easyest way to make something that they don't like sucsiful would be to attack it.

I think thats the American title of the book....

In a way it fits better with the other book titles:

The Golden Compass
The Subtle Knife
The Amber Spyglass

All being an item and an adjective.

Thanks a lot! I don't care whether it does it justice (iyo) or not, I just have no clue what it's about, and wanted a very basic idea of whether or not it was worth seeing.
Thanks for your help (not)!

Basic premise is that a little girl (Lyra) is in possession of the Althimeter (?sp), which when a question is asked can give answers (if you know how to read it). However to complicate matters there are 'sides' looking to gain possession of the 'Golden Compass'.

This is a very very basic premise, there is a lot more to the books then just this. I might get slated here, but I found it very similar to Dune. Its one of those books that you can't really describe, it has to be read.

Just noticed that my local Cineworld are showing The Golden Compass on two of their six screens from December 5th. Is this expected to be a huge hit like Lord Of The Rings, Spiderman, harry Potter etc? Just didnt expect this to be on multiple screens.

Also, it's set in a parallel world much the same as ours but with noticable differences.

Lyra is an orphan, and finRAB herself torn between many differing factions who all want to use her ability to read the *ahem* 'golden compass' for their own end.

There's also a big, big plotline including the dangers of having, essentially, a 'soul.'

(And that's just the first book too - there are two more!)

It's billed as a kiRAB book, and I read it when I was about 10 (several times) but my mum and best friend have just finished reading it, as have my aunt and young cousin. So it's got a bit of a Harry Potter appea going on, but with deeper themes and less 'kid' characters!

Hows that for an overview? :p

I attended a private screening of this film a few days ago.

I personally really enjoyed the film, and I've never read any of the books. I hadn't even heard of them before hearing about the film adaption/s. ;)
