The Godfather vs the Godfather part 2

I've got the VHS Godfather Epic version with 1 and 2 re-edited into chronological order so they blend into one film really.
 
Ah thats cool. Never heard of that. Just looked it up though.

The second movie is great, but to me, it just wasn't as special as the first movie. I loved Vito as the godfather and Sunny, who were obviously not around in the second movie. De Niro kind of made up for this though, in the scenes of him as a young Vito in the second movie.

I found the second movie harder to follow, and had to ask my bro what the hell was going on a few times. Characters would turn up and I'd be thinking 'who is this guy?'

I liked the scenes of Vito coming up, but I didn't like the switching back and forth, which will be unpopular, because people seemed to love that.

I'd give the first movie a 10/10 and the second 9/10.

I might try watching the version you have watched though.

Number 3 was pretty shit to be fair. Worth watching if you're a fan of the first two movies, but quite a poor effort for the final installment of the trilogy.
 
The third one is a bit underrated, i reckon. Yeah, it was a total disappointment at the time and it clearly isn't in the same league as the previous 2 movies but it's a pretty good movie nontheless.

I'm going for part 1. Part 2 is more epic sprawling and it's succeeRAB in its ambitions but part 1 is just more enjoyable to watch and the whole Baptism And Murder section before the end is one of the most intense 5 or 10 minutes in movie history.
 
Totally agree, edge of seat stuff, often copied, ie.. Elizabeth, never beaten.
The shoot out in The Untouchables , in the train station comes pretty close though....
 
The second one is by far the best, the way it keeps going backwarRAB and forwarRAB in time showing Don Corleone as a young man (De niro) and an old man (Brando) is brilliant.
Also the scene when Michael has his own brother Fredo killed is breathtaking.
 
Yeah I'll go along with that. Both movies are superb but the second just shades it for me, Michael's final descent into darkness is just jaw-dropping cinema.
 
I've just bought The Godfather: Part II, and I'm trying to watch it now. It's still hard to follow, and I'm yawning my way through it, and thinking about playing Pro Evo or something.
 
I love them both equally!!

But if i had to pick one, it would be The Godfather because it was the first film and also because of Brando's performance.
 
I really can't choose. I actually saw Part II first, strangely enough (then watched the whole trilogy a year later over about a week). I had hardly any bloody idea what was going on. The problem was that by the time I finally got round to watching the original I knew pretty much everything that was going to happen.

It still doesn't stop them from becoming two of the best films I've ever seen.

And there is no third film! Yes, there was a film which was released called The Godfather Part III which featured the entire cast and crew and picked up from the plot of the first two, but it's not a third film as far as I'm concerned. I just thought it was so superficial, I didn't care about any of the new generation of characters or their stupid incest, and I found it ridiculous that Michael would ever get back with Kay after what happened.




Brando wasn't in the second one...
 
you may not agree with me (and I have no authority to say this as I have not seen the Epic version), but doesnt re-editing the chronology against the directors original intent devalue the film. It was made the way it was for a reason!?
 
I thought I was the only one that found Part 2 a little confusing,upon first viewing.
For a long time I prefered The Godfather over p2 because I found it easier to follow and because of Brando's iconic performance.
Thesedays I like both movies equally,not favouring one over the other.Part 2 is definitely as great as the original,just more complex with equally fantastic dialogue and set pieces,replacing Brando's tour de force performance with Pacino's phenomenal descent into darkness.
Goodfellas,White Heat,American Gangster are classics but no gangster movie has ever bettered Godfather 1 & 2.
