The "God-shaped hole." I first read this phrase in a scientific article discussing religous experience outside of religion, as demonstrated in brain scans. The gist of the article, if I recall correctly, is that our brains are wired to give us a relgious experience at certain moments, regardless of whether or not we have a religion to plug into that experience. Evolution gave us a God-shaped hole, and we seek religious experiences in religion, music, meditation, environmentalism, nature, love, or wherever.
I can't find that article, and when I google "God-shaped hole" I find hundreds of references, mostly using it in the opposite sense of its original meaning. Can anyone point me to the source of this phrase?
