The gas needle in my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP isn't working right...?

The needle moves but doesn't seem to read accurately. I will have traveled 350 miles on one tank, and sometimes it will still say I have a full tank. Is there any none costly trouble shooting I can do myself? I would have to have to go to mechanic if it's something simple.
 
First get some gas. Most cars are designed to go 300-400 miles on a single tank. Even my Metro which got 41 MPG had only 10 gallon of gas tank.

Second, if the needle is moving it means that it isn't something easy. You can either get it fixed which means the mechanic will probably drop the fuel tank and replace the pump/float unit or just fill up every 350 miles.
 
The problem sounds like the float (a part of the sending unit) is going bad. your gonna need to drop the gas tank and replace the sending unit and while your at it change the pump. Lil tip get the part from the dealer ac delco. you don't want to do this again in another year.
 
this is a common failure in many of gm's cars. It is the fuel level sensor in the fuel tank. the only fix is to replace it. price is about $175 for the part plus labor to drop the tank and replace it. I've seen service bulletins on some cars where it needed to have the computer reflashed but I checked for bulletins on your car and there wasn't any that were applicable.
