A painfully obviously low budget production - I mean really.
However, I won't hold that against it. It made the whole thing rather "quaint" and "English" in an old Dr. Who sort of way.
Some of the CGI was poor - especially the Selenites themselves. It would have been better to use actors in costumes or keep the aliens off-camera completely. As it was they were really distracting.
The "old" makeup was terrible. It created a strong resemblance to a character I have seen on TV recently. Surely one of Enfield/Whitehouse/Tate have used this guys twin brother !
I thought Rory Kinnear was superb and held the whole thing together with his completely believable reaction to the unfolding situation. If this role had been played badly it would have destroyed the whole show. I see that he is the son of the excellent (and sadly missed) comic actor Roy.
I loved the (not quite so subtle) gags. I laughed out loud at the "What number is flashing ? - It's 1202. Ignore it !". Brilliant ! (If I have to explain it, then you won't find it funny !)
It's been many years since I read the book - am I right in assuming that the actions of the Prof at the end were invented for this version ? At the risk of being a spoiler (look away now) I recall the book being told from the perspective of the other guy - who wouldn't have known about the professor's final act (which, at the risk of being controversial, could be described as a either a suicide bombing or genocide !).
But on the whole - I rather enjoyed it. Perhaps it could have been trimmed down to a one hour slot though.
