Lots of people are going to be converting their lawns to vegetable gardens the way things are heading. I think she's providing a good example of what Americans are going to need to do if they want to remain well fed in desperate economic times. I have wondered who was going to pull the weeds; she had elementary kids helping plant it. I suspect white house gardeners laid it out first, and probably rototilled it up nice, too. This notion of watermelons has strongly racist undertones and I find that part offensive.
