The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

Oh man, that's so lame! But if you like that, you should check out the Postal Service I guess. They were doing that sort of thing years before, and much better.

I wasnt really into them when I was into the Elephant 6 banRAB either. If it helps, keep in mind theres 3 seperate 'eras' of of Montreal: Their twee pop (first two albums) 60's psych pop (The *** Parade through Adhils Aboratum) and their dance pop-punk (Satanic panic to the present) and listen to what genre's easiest to digest, and go from there.

And dac is right about Olivia Tremor Control. I listened to Black Foliage the other day and thought it might actually be better than Neutral Milk Hotel. They also sound alot like Grizzly Bear, I recently realized.

I usually only find him grating when it comes to the love/breakup ballaRAB.

I Miss You, Southern Girl and most of Light Grenades for example.

I can't remeraber to be honest. I listened to Vs when it came out once & hated it.

I was just filing them loosely under the 'chicks with weird voices' bracket.

I hate it when people just say they don't like an album and then don't elaborate. Saying "it's boring" isn't going to spawn any constructive discussion, dammit, you need to state why you thought it was boring and what else was wrong with it.

I can see where you are coming from...but I still to this day consider Loveless to be the ultimate "I get it!!!" album. I hated it first time I heard it...I heard tiny hints of amazing melodies that I just wanted to be more clear, and nothing was ever as defined as I wanted it to be. But then I got it, I guess. I could all the sudden hear those melodies and loved that he could create them in such a mess of guitars. The music is meant to be heard as a big amorphous sound...the songs are entities within themselves.

Well, you get the idea...I doubt it will change your mind. At least you like the Smiths. You saved yourself on that one.

This Charming Man, Hand In Glove, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, The Boy With A Thorn In His Side, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, Girlfriend In A Coma, to name a few. The singles compilation is imo the best thing The Smiths have to offer.

Ha - that's funny. Or like ironic at least. How do you figure that Araya is "pretending" any more than Varg (doesn't that mean 'wolf' in some language? What a fake)?
I wager that Araya has a deeper understanding of his own background and religion than wolfman does. Exploration of darkness is the essence of Catholicism - especially for American Hispanic Catholics. Perhaps Varg neeRAB to experience life outside of the liberal 80s Scandinavian politics that spawned the region's fairly ridiculous 90s black metal scene and a posh jail cell before he can ponder what the meaning of 'extreme' is, eh?

If you're just asking why Slayer is a good metal band then here is my response:
Araya screamed with more hardcore punk finesse than any of the other 'big ones', Lorabardo played better drums than pretty much everybody since the Jazz greats, and King played ingeniously unintuitive, nonsensical guitar solos that stir the soul more than any xenophobic Norwegian asshole ever has. If you like Wolfie but hate Araya, and this bias reflects in your metal taste, then I doubt you're much of a music fan.

Without a f*cking doubt.

I know they're not for every taste.

But they take an unfair beating as it is, I don't know why they get all the hate for being a "mainstream radio" band when they're pretty much the only one right now that doesn't make me want to kill myself.

They're the only thing I can even still listen to on modern rock radio.

I think it's a genre that has always alluded me and I keep trying to come back to it and see something in it I previously missed, but like you say - maybe it's just one of them things..
