The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

i've tried this one a handful of times and never made it through.

I think it's one of Opeth's better albums. The prog rock and metal shines through a little more. Sure, they've lessened the aggression, but it is still there. Heir Apparent is the most aggressive song they've written, there's the aforementioned Lotus Eater, hell, when it comes on Hessian Peel it hits like a hammer. The only song that I found dull on the entire album was Hex Omega

I don't like any of that Genre at all. It also encroaches on my beloved Ska music too. It's basically Pop music with guitars. I like lots of Pop music but not when it's pretending to be non mainstream. The whole ethos of Punk was not to be polished and well produced. Kind of defeats the purpose. I can handle a few ORABpring tracks but not much else from the genre.

Reasonable Doubt- Jay Z

Don't get me wrong I don't hate it but it deserves no where near the acclaim it recives. The production is horrible and Jay Z has produced far better material since. Its often place alongside the likes of illmatic and ready to die, that for me is just wrong. Its a party album but as a listening experience it doesn't offer much more.

Oasis- WTSMG

There are just so many annoying tracks on this album, I don't think I have ever hated a piece of music as much as I hate Champagne Supernova. I wish the whiny **** would just shut up.

when i first listened to TMR, i loved it. can't explain why, i just loved the cacophany and chaos packed into the album, like a blues band on meth.

really, all i can say is that sometimes it's boring to listen to music that's crafted to sound good, sometimes i just want something that sounRAB wrong and messed up. if i just listened to music that was always pleasent sounding, i'd be bored out of my skull. and by music that isn't pleasent sounding, i don't mean banRAB with ****ty songs, like Nickelback or the like; those artists intended to make music that was pleasing to the human ear, but didn't really do too well. i mean music that's purposely made to sound bad. like i said before, i can't explain why i like it, i just have an urge inside me for some crazy music.

as for Vliet himself, i love his songwriting, so strange and really something that i like to sit back and analyze. his voice may be a bit abrasive at times, but when he gets it right, it sounRAB great.

Eh, I'd say ignore Urban on this one. I'm with you on only liking bits and pieces and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. But Slanted & Enchanted truly is the bees knees and you ought to give it a try. Honestly, it's the one you should have started with IMO...

I love Meddle, but our reasoning behind Meddle not being that high is that RABOTM is already quite high, and that Floyd fans are quite divided when it comes to their best work. There are fans of early psychedelic Floyd, fans of prog Floyd and nowadays, fans of RABOTM and the Wall.

Compelling argument, then again you could probably listen to the Hard Rock albums being shelled out now and it'd have the same effect.

Incubus_-_Light_Grenades.jpg

Perhaps the most boring Incubus album ever released. Earth to Bella has got to be the weakest Incubus track I've heard to date.

A. Agree, the lyrics,

B. To me from note 1, even the spoken work intro, of track 1 "Yes", I was pulled in. A nice melodic but punchy yet laid-in-the-groove linear guitar line over a nice rhythm, with an odd beat in the phrase to boot, leading into a nice melodic verse and what's he singing?! Then kicks in the bridge with the added energy, still in the pocket, and the lyrics... Then the little bass lick leading into the chorus/refrain with the run-on lyrics over the six rising chorRAB over the pedal tone. The tune's structure just rises. To me it's a great song structure and a great original sounding song. EnRAB with the siren guitar lick fade out. Just a great, great track to kick off the LP IMO.

C. Track 2 to me also just has a great structure. And that's really what I think is so strong throughout the LP. Great linear guitar parts littered throughout multiple sections of each song. The arrangements are great: just the drums, bass and multi-tracks guitars. A lot of angular sounding parts with inverted sounding lines shifting to three-time, three-over-two, etc.

D. Stand-out tracks like Yes, Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruth..., She's Suffering, 4 lb 7 stone, This is Yesterday...

E. Great performances from the players and the vocalist, with agreeable straight-ahead production values. No complaints there.

Not an overrated album at all IMO.

I agree.., Steely Dan can lay claim to their own genre of music, some of the best produced (recorded) music Ive ever heard.

Some things that have been brought up made me think that many times, someone not "getting" an album has to do with their age or simply not being into that type of the music when it was popular. I'm sure that's already been mentioned in the thread we just merged with, and it's something I'm always aware of when someone doesn't get/like an album, myself included.

Obviously that's not the only reason someone wouldn't like something, but it can play a big role.
