The Explain Why You Like This Album ('cause i don't understand) Thread

Are Rush classed as progressive rock? Really? I just thought they were straight up rock and roll. Never really minded rush, but I'm not into them either.

I've always found progressive rock a bit pretentious and boring, but I'm sure many will be quick to question my view and put me right. Just can't help having that feeling though.. At least I'm not the only one who is having trouble with this genre.

My thought process was, progressive rock.. hm okay, let's try it. Then.. progressive rock is the devil. And now I'm like well maybe it's not all bad..
 
Well the thing is, The Residents did that avant garde stuff but in a much more accessible and entertaining way, in addition to that they were more diverse and knew what an actual melody sounded like.

Also nobody tries to make them out to be these untouchable poetic geniuses, I'm not saying they were either but goddamn they certainly qualify more than Beefheart does.

I just don't see the genius in a guy chanting out (all the while trying to make his voice sound as obnoxious as possible) worRAB with no real meaning over what sounRAB like a bunch of instruments being stomped on and beaten with mallets.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Medicine...such a horribly underrated band. Interesting little fact - the singer is Bruce Lee's daughter. I thought that was kind of cool.

Anyway, as far as Loveless goes...you either love it or hate it. People who love sounRABcapes and atmosphere will usually love it while people who prefer more structured melody and progression will probably hate it. There are better shoegaze albums out there, but this one stanRAB just a little higher than the rest simply because it is a testament to a vision that was not compromised on. No wonder Kevin ShielRAB never looked forward to writing a new album...that guy is too much of a perfectionist.

I listened to the remastered album just last night while going to sleep on my studio phones and let me just say...there is WAYYY more going on in that music than anyone even realizes. I love having to work for the melody and subtleties of the music I listen to. It is so rewarding.

I never thought to search 'weaponry.'

So yeah, maybe a nice mod will do a merge, either that or delete. Not fussed which really, at least I know that thread is there, because I think it's a good idea for a thread.
 
That's what the other guy was saying, not me.

Now I really dig The Clash. And my problem with The Stooges isn't that they were not technically gifted musicians, it's because they weren't gifted and yet went way way way beyond their limits as a band, doing extended jams and long guitar solos that come off as just atonal racket.

Even when Sonic Youth and King Crimson did long and noisy pieces, there was still structure behind it, with The Stooges everything just seems completely random and spur of the moment.

Now a lot of great musicians had that kinda approach, but because The Stooges weren't great musicians, what I'm left with at least, is just a bunch of aimless f*cking around.

The Clash were not technical greats but for the most part they knew their limitations, even when they began experimenting with other genres of music. And that's really all a good musician is required to be, you can experiment, but know your limitations and do what you know how to do.
 
Davis' playing is very subdued on Kind of Blue, which isn't abnormal. Davis was always one to give more of a spotlight to his accompanying musicians than to himself. Even Coltrane himself has a greater presence on the record than Miles' does.
Miles Ahead is definitely an album that I would assert is a better album than Kinda' Blue, which is a shame , because its definitely his most underrated album and does not get nearly the credit it deserves. Birth of Cool and Round Midnight, as well are also,i think, more representative of Miles' greatness as a trumpet player and not just as a bandleader/arranger.
I don't argue the greatness of Kind of Blue. It's an amazing album. It has just gotten to the point where it's almost obligatory for a jazz head to avow that Kind of Blue is the greatest jazz album of all time, and I just don't see it.

All great songs IMO. I never get the issue with her voice, she adRAB something to the band and makes the album even greater than it would've been without her.
