I've seen this movie loaRAB of times, but this version was the full director's cut including the spiderwalk (well about 3 seconRAB of it) and updated special effects.

I have the dvd of it and it's cut and had loaRAB of scenes missing.

How come they can show it on tv, but the dvd had bits missing...

The Exorcist: Director's Cut, including the spider-walk and other scenes, has been available for a number of years on DVD alongside the regular version.

The standard one is the better of the two, in my opinion.

I caught a bit of it last night on Sci-Fi, but couldn't bear to watch the whole thing through. One of those films to watch in daylight! :D

I hate to be pedantic but the version with the spiderwalk is NOT the directors cut.
The Directors Cut
was the original theatrical version as released in 1973 and on dvd some years ago.

Friedkin was invited back to tinker with the film and added the spiderwalk as it had lots of interest.

In the directors approved theatrical version Friedkin said he deliberately removed the spiderwalk for its sheer stupidity.

Thats why the dvd was titled "The Version You've Never Seen " rather than the inaccurate directors cut.

Are the SF Channel labelling it as a directors cut?

I'm sure I've seen it trailered as the Director's Cut, but could be wrong. But both Amazon and Play have it listed as the Director's Cut, though the red banner does say it's 'The Version You've Never Seen'.

I stand corrected if that's the case. Either way, still cannot it watch it at night. The only other recent movie of the same ilk to have the same effect is the Emily Rose movie. Scares the life outta me!

It may be being trailed as the Directors Cut but for the reasons I gave earlier thats not strictly true.

The director was involved in the reconstruction but as he was happy with the 1973 original thats why it was released as TVYNS.

Of course, that does not sound anywhere near as interesting on a tv trail as "directors cut".

I thought "Extended Edition" was more appropriate.

Its a while since I've seen the dvd so I can't recall if anything was removed apart from the final shot of the demon's face as the priest jumps out the window at the end, which was changed to a morphing effect purely to improve upon the effects technology that was available in 1973

On the original DVD I have Friedkin and William Peter Blatty (the writer) discuss in some detail why it's better without the spiderwalk.

No doubt a large quantity of cash was involved.

I've seen clips of the spider walk on youtube and the full scene showed her sticking her tongue out like some sort of lizard. But the scene that SCi-FI showed ended in her vomiting blood.

@aliasjones - I read the book before seeing the film in seventy something. I found the smell of the bedroom scene 'stronger' in the book. Did you leave the cinema before the end? What was the day like leading up to it? How many were "we"?

I can't imagine what it would be like to randomly end up at a showing of The Exorcist in '74.
