The Evil Dead - pile of overrated, over-hyped, gooey crap?

The DVD that is fully uncut has "Full Uncut Version" plastered on the front cover (i think it's an Anchor Bay release). I believe that the 'Book of the Dead' version is also uncut, but you can't buy that any more unless its second hand.

You can tell if it's uncut if it's got the infamous "tree rape" and "pencil in the foot" scenes in it.

I rented this from a video shop with a friend when we were both about 14 (video shops didn't seem to give a shit about your age back in the early 80s) and watched it at my parents when they'd gone out. It scared the hell out of us.

It's funny how The Sun newspaper would do reports on the filth of video nasties such as The Evil Dead back in the days of Mary Whitehouse yet recently they gave away a copy of the film for free on dvd saying it was a classic.

I agree in those days they were the big movies then evil dead, bogeyman. driller killer rember watching evil for the first time where he sticks the pencil in her heel gave me nightmares for days.:D

The only films I consider 'crap' are technically slick but by-the-numbers, homogenous 'products' that in addition to that do not contain any dramaturgic interest to compensate. I appreciate that a lot of low-budget horror films from the 70s and 80s which were once lauded or otherwise cause celebres are now considered 'crap' merely on account of being technically outmoded, but to me they remain interesting and enjoyable.

There's a great documentary, "A Short Film About the Long Career of Abel Ferrara of DK's director, who, despite his shambling, under-bridge-dwelling troll-like appearance is a very smart, dedicated and painstaking chap. DK is probably his worst film.

Those were the bits that frightened the bejesus out of me when I first saw it in 1982. As for the rest of the film, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry . . . so I did both!
