I wonder why do people consider Freddie Mercury to be so mysterious? I had the pleasure of meeting each and every member of Queen in Houston, Texas in 1977. Very strange how easy it is to view someone as untouchable, godlike and larger than life when you see them on TV or on the stage, or listen to their records. But when you meet them one on one, up close and personal as I met Mr. Mercury for the first time, all that suddenly leaves you. You see them as they are....real human beings.

A couple things struck me about Freddie....for one he was not quite as tall as one might suspect. Not short, but definitely not tall either. I would put him at a very attractive average height. His skin was flawless, a very pale olive color. His hair was not quite as dark as it looked in photographs. In photographs his hair looks a very raven black color, but up close his hair actually looked to be a very dark blackish brown color and contrasted perfectly with his relatively pale olive skin.
He seemed very painfully shy, almost distant and very reserved. He had a very humble, sweet demeanor. He struck me as someone who was gentle as a lamb when dealing with people. He made only minimal eye contact with me as we talked. He seemed the quietest of the four with the least amount to say. He seemed almost to me as a 'shrinking violet' if that can be believed!

Complete opposite of what I was to see onstage the next night. I was in complete awe. But his offstage shyness and reserve, combined with his flambouyance onstage only added to his mystique.
Still, he seemed very human to me.
So, I ask all of you. What do YOU consider to be the most mysterious and enigmatic quality about Freddie?
