The elephant man: Is it really that bad?

Thanks for the replies. My friend said the disfigurement was too much them, even though this film has rave reviews. I read in a message board that one viewer flicked on the film saw his face and found it too cringeworthy, but I suppose everyone has different opinions when it comes to that sort of thing.
 
I'm gonna order this on DVD after reading this thread. Apparently his prosthetics (or whatever else was used) were created from actual casts of Joseph 'John' Merrick's disfigurements. And the Oscar for Best Make Up was created as a result of this film.
 
Have to agree with everything said here. I saw it again quite recently.

You sit there desperately trying not to cry (and not succeding) but then he shows the photo of his mother....................
