The Descent

JamieBarry, I haven't read the book but the game wasn't anything to do with flying the aircraft...(it may have been the objective, but could never happen as it was all tunnels and watching your back type stuff).

In this game, you just shot and blasted your way through everything coming before and after you in all these creepy and scarey tunnels. But what made it more scarey was the sound. It freaked me out.

It would be interesting to know if there was any connection from this game idea almost a decade ago to now.....i.e. results - a full feature film.

But then again, we might never know, even though the similarities are incredibly similar.

It seems to me that a few people on this forum like their 'scares' of the one-death-every-five minutes slasher movie variety. The Descent is a different proposition that but none the worse for it.

I agree. The Descent sets itself up to be a jump a minute affair, but after the first ten minutes, it slows down to a nice build up to the horror of what's to come! It scared the pants off me.

Sophisticated horror plays on your mind and fears, and that's what this film did - there were moments where you were convinced something evil was going to happen, and even though it may not have done you were still worried about what was coming up - and rightly so. I'm never going in a cave again.

There are so many elements

- the opening scene in the car (won't spoil it)

- the hospital scene

- the claustrophobia

^ And that's all before we get to the "main event".

The main event is of course brilliant - jaw-dropping, terrifying scenes.

Then there's the ending - leaves you thinking for a while.

Here is a description of the book 'The Descent' by Jeff Long.
It was published 14 September 2000. Seems unlikely that Neil Marshall would copy the book and keep the original title.

We are not alone

I did jump a couple of times, but having watched all of it, thinking, it's surely got to get better (it didn't!) I'd have to agree with another poster who described it as shite !!!

It was great apart from one thing I didnt get..

the girl at the end leaving Juno for dead, ok so Juno killed her friend BY ACCIDENT and left her when she was as good as dead anyway wow she hardly deserves to be killed for that! so maybe Sarah was going mad but I dont know what that other dying girl was on about when she was saying Juno should'nt be trusted and was a traiter  what the hell was that about, was that just revenge for being accidently killed and it was her fault she got killed anyway she could have said something instead of sneaking up on her....that bit was soo grusome.

wow I've just noticed this film has had a thread on it going for over 3 years.....obv not continously but its not bad for a "shite" film :P

to be honest i loved this film and i rave about it as one of the best modern horror films!
I love the fact that it's british as most are american made and you can see that from the way its written. It is meant to be a taut, edgy experience rather than a US style slash em and gash em. however some people wont be able to find that scary as they cant get out of the minRABet that they are watching a film and therefore wont allow themselves to totally immerse themselves in it. this however does not make it a bad film....in fact i respect a film a lot more for taking away the gore in favour of a bit of mystery.
I also love the ending as its nice for there to be uncertainty rather than the old one escapes and tells the police bla bla ba.
I do think a 2nd one would be a massive mistake though unless they were to do one of her getting lost on a flight of stairs.....call it the ascent?

p.s
i also think Cabin Fever is a bloody good film too!

also dont have a go for people watching only 5 minutes, its all on personal opinion.
I managed to sit through all of the Love Guru....which is awful
but could only cope with 30 mins of Wall E which ive heard is awesome but it just really bored me :(
