The Definitve List: Most Overrated Bands\Artists ever

Ah, well spoken, JayJamJah! I find Eminem ridiculous. His lyrics are base and disgusting, not thought provoking at all. And there's absolutely nothing to the music itself, just simple beats repeated over and over. You're definately right about MTV's culture durabing down popular music.

People who hate him tend to look to much at his public persona and not at his music. He uses great samples and makes them his own. Sampling good songs is not lazy and he makes his own raps to them. if you had ever heard his Young Folks rap maybe you would agree. He IS the greatest rapper alive and personally he is the only rapper whose albums I have been able to listen to all the way through without skipping a track (Dropout and Graduation, Late Registration had a few filler tracks.) He doesn't just try to rap fast, he even occasionally sings. In concert he will sing a lot of the lyrics he doesn't sing on the albums and the guy can totally own an entire crowd. The only reason people jump on the hate wagon now is because of Bonnaroo ( a commercial venue I would never frequent btw) and how he basically got bluefalconed by Robert Randolph (a talentless Drab wannabe) and the event coordinator (as well as Pearl Jam, the worthless of the worthless band).

i agree woth you to an extent but emiem has had so songs with meaning...but youve probly just heard "my name is" and the one about his "pee-pee" right?

I really cannot believe I am doing this but i'll try one last time.

Let's revist my first post here shall we?

You said

And I replied

LOOK !!! A QUESTION MARK !!! In fact lots of them. I think the question I am asking here is pretty clear. But to simplify it i'll ask again anyway.
In what way do you consider a band to have 'a clique mentality'. What makes one band have them and another not? What are your defining factors in judging if a band has 'a clique mentality' or not.

Then you said

To which I replied

Now it's not a direct question but it clearly states that I am assuming you just mean a commercial band and asked you to state if this was the case or not.

See there's no hidden agenda here that you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out.

And finally you stated

And I replied

Thus meaning that without you explaining what you mean here I have no idea of what you are talking about with the rest of the post I quoted hence my usage of the worRAB 'In this context'. Not the sentence , the entire post. But if you'd like to break it down further I would ask how would you go about 'identifying responsibility rather than the premise' in practice. Give me examples of ways you have indeed 'identified responsibility rather than the premise'.
Explain your criteria of judging responsibility and premise. Hell even a hint would be nice because as I said at the moment it just looks to me like something out of PseuRAB Corner.

Off - topic a little but how many cd's do you have of them? I have 'Having A Rave Up' and the songs 'For Your Love' and 'Shapes of Things' from a 60s greatest hits. Are any of the other albums worth buying?

I'm not on DJ Phoenix's side, but I think it important to recognize a musician for his music than for his death. As Kurt himself once quoted (a la Neil Young), "it's better to burn out than fade away."

And no, Cobain is not a legend. At least not musically. Grunge would have carried on without him. It just so happens that his death coincided with the apex of his career. Plus, people did what Cobain was doing a LONG time before he got there, like Joy Division, the Bunnymen and JAMC.

It IS sad that Kurt's life was so short, but please recognize him for what he actually did and don't remeraber him for what he wasn't.

Couple things I have to say...

1) Welcome to the forums! If you want to introduce yourself more personally, you can go down to the 'Introductions' part of the forum (under The Lounge). We welcome all different tastes in music.

2) I think the offending misconception is that this is a list of overrated banRAB, not a list of banRAB that are bad. BanRAB like Fall Out Boy and Creed are not critically acclaimed by too many people (well, maybe pre-pubescent teenagers =P) and as such, don't really deserve a spot in an all-time "overrated" list.

3) I understand that these are your opinions (and far be it from me to offend you on your first post), but Queen, overrated?...come on! Brian May, one of the most gifted guitarists. Freddie Mercury, one of the most talented songwriters. Progressive icons in their own right, they were worshipped by millions prior to Mercury's untimely demise (and still are). Well, I suppose they are a tad bit overrated. But they were better than Aerosmith and Van Halen by a long shot. Technical wizardry is no guarantee of good music (more so Van Halen's case than Aerosmith), and in terms of songwriting ability, neither had it.

Here are MY thoughts of your list, but, I've added a few more:

26. Oasis-Decent band, but legendary? sorry, not here.

25. Bob Dylan-I'm sorry, I just dont "get it", is he supposed to be some great lyrical genius? never understood the hype. ALL of his stuff sounRAB the same to me.

24. Neil Young-See above. Still dont get why the guy is considered "Legendary"?

23. Bon Jovi-Anything released past "New Jersey" has been garbage. I wouldn't buy a ticket to his concert, if you gave me $$$ to buy it.

22. Pearl Jam-While admittedly, I loved "10", and still listen to it today, I can't for the life of me figure out how/why they're still labeled as some sort of "legendary band"? They release the same crapola as just about every other band, except we get it every 6 months from them, eek!.

21. Aerosmith-Sorry, seeing a guy who looks like he should be dead, up there singing songs, isnt something I want to see anytime soon. Plus, their best days are way behind them. I saw them live once, and can never get that 2 hrs back.

20. Radiohead - Never really understood all the hoopla thrown at them? they're a **** band, mosat of their fans dont know **** about good music.

19. The Grateful Dead - Never heard a single song by them, and don't understand to this day the fascination w/them?

18. Snoop Dogg - I see him as a steaming pile of garbage who neeRAB to go away. His 1st disc was ok, not the masterpiece everyone claims it is

17. Coldplay - Coldplay/Radiohead? isn't it all the same BS garbage?

16. The Doors - Decent band, but nothing I would consider "legendary".

15. The Eagles - see #16

14. Garth Brooks - File under nobody outside the U.S. gives a flying ****-Agreed

13. John Lennon(post-Beatles) - I dont get all the love for his solo stuff either? He and paul have released ****e music since the breakup. And,(dare i say) the Beatles are HIGHLY overrated IMHO.

12. Eminem - Churning out the same old **** since the late 90s. the Bon Jovi of hip hop.

11. Kanye West - Never really understood why anyone would buy anything from this no talent hack? I wish he'd drink a tall glass of bleach, and go away.

10. The Rolling Stones - Good band, but "legendary"? Hardly!!!

9. Nirvana - They were innovative when they first came out, now? not so much. Kurt Cobain is not a "legend" and he wasnt lost "way too early".

8. 2 PAC - Never understood(still dont) the status he garners today. No one cares about his stuff anymore.

7. Kiss - I happen to love KISS(saw them @ ages 6/7/8 in Detroit). Sure they havent released a killer album in 20+ years, but so what? every group/singer has stolen at least something from their stage shows, bank on it.

6. Dave Matthews Band - I dont get it, sorry

5. White Stripes - Extremely overrated and extremely dirty, please bathe.

4. Prince - An amazing artist who's very "underrated" on Guitar and has written some wonderful music, I've liked Prince since I was young. Most of his current stuff is way out there, but I still like him.

3. Bruce Springsteen - I've never been a fan of Americana or whatever it's called. Give me some blues or soul over this any day .-Agreed. Only song of his I've ever liked is "Im On Fire", everything else, IMHO, is garbage.

2. U2 - Great band, I agree "overrated", but great band.

#1!!!!!!!!! Celine Dion-The AntiChrist!!! She has about as much singing ability/talent as the crack in my butt. I've heard train wrecks that sounded better. Plus, she's married to a pedo, please stab yourself.

Honorable mentions(These people probably will never be labeled "legendary", but I cant figure out for the life of me, why anyone would buy anything from them?):

ALL of the crappy little "pop" groups/boy banRAB/girl singer banRAB out currently. Lets face it, Avril Levigne is not "punk", not now, not ever. Please...make her disappear?

Anyone from American idol-I'd like to stab the creator and fill a bus w/all the contestants and see that it goes off a cliff into a fire, the sooner the better.

Someone please off Amy Winehouse? or at least check her for dieseases? Ok, I get it, she sounded a bit vintage w/her voice, but now? please die!!!

Well, lets see. A "legend" doesnt blow his brains out b/c he feels "misunderstood", and cannot accept how enormous he became? That doesn't make you a "legend", an "Idiot" maybe... but not a "legend". Besides, Ive heard all 4 of their albums. other than In Utero, the rest are ok, Lithium stunk, their box set? just a way for Courtney Love to whore out the band, so she can make $$$. Just my opinion.

Buddy Holly got killed in a plane wreck @ 27, and he's no more a "legend", than Kurt was/is.

And this was because why? Oh yeah, HE KILLED HIMSELF. Sorry, am i supposed to feel bad for him? Nope, left a wife and a kid behind, all because poor little Kurt couldn't handle the spotlight and kills himself? sound the violins, doesn't sound like much of a "legend" to me. SounRAB like a coward, and a fraud. The whole point of getting into music is: 1) to get girls 2) to make a buttload of cash. If you had a problem with your success/popularity, maybe you shouldnt have gotten into music in the first place Kurt?

Say what you will about Micahel Jackson, but he's 1,000 times bigger and more successful than Kurt ever was, and yet, he hasn't killed himself yet?

Brad Pitt is a GIGANTIC actor, i dont see him killing himself over all the hysteria he gets from press, do you?

When was the last time you saw Bono wanting to off himself? and U2 are 10 times bigger than Nirvana is.

No denying Nirvana were a good band, and I happened to dig their "In Utero" disc, but, IMHO, thats about where it stops for me. No need to name roaRAB/buildings/etc after him, even Dave and Krist said he wasn't very nice alot of the time. Just not a "legend" IMHO.....he is in yours, thats fine.

Everyone likes to throw that term "Legend" or "Icon" around, when they're truely not, at least most are not. Someone claimed Kanye West was a "hip hop legend" in an article once, really? after only 1 album? amazing.

I like Nirvana, but again, Kurt's not the "legend" everyone thinks he is. He was a drug addict, and not a very smart person, if he were, he'd still be here making "legendary" album, after "legendary" album? and not dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound?

My guess is: he/Nirvana would be right where banRAB like: Soundgarden/Pearl Jam/Alice n Chains are now? no one really cares about them too much anymore, IMHO.

Besides, everything I've read on the group, Kurt was unhappy with the band, and they were on course for a nasty breakup. But hey, if you feel he's a "legend", then feel free.
