Anyone seen these dvd's both starring Sean Bean as a helpless estranged Father whose daughter has gone missing and it's up to the his wife to rescue her?

Both good films.

The Dark is huge around where I live but I still havn't seen it.

The reason it is big is because a girl from my school stars in it as one of the main cast.

I did enjoy Silent Hill, thought it was quite unsettling in places, but Sean Bean doesn't really do much as it's the mother and daughter that are the stars. Loved the downbeat ending too.

Originally, his character was not in the Silent Hill script. The studio disliked every single major character being female (Rose, Sharon, Alessa, dark Alessa, Cybil, Dahlia, Anna, Christabella) so they were forced to write his character in. Which is exactly why his character seems so utterly pointless. Because he IS pointless. He's just there for the (unused) testosterone factor.

Loved Silent Hill. Very faithful game adaptation (atmosphere) and a good (fresh) take on the story.

Disliked The Dark. Bland. Very bland. And too similar to Silent Hill, which by virtue of its birth as a game, was around first and laid claim to that story.

I said in atmosphere, not in story.

But when we mention atmosphere - Rose acts just like Harry Mason did. The difference is that Rose is female and thus is expected to act like that, as opposed to Harry being a male who acts like a little girl. That's the reasoning behind changing the sex of the parent.

I disagree, actually. I felt he was necessary in a couple of scenes:
When he and Rose are both in the same space at the same time, and can't see each other, but he can smell her scent - for me that's a great scene, and a critical clue as to Rose's predicament.

The ending - Rose neeRAB someone to return home to.

Someone is also needed to uncover the real-world part of the story; to get the adoption recorRAB etc.
I loved it too - very visual and beautiful. It's my favourite film of this year.
