Tautou picked to play opposite Hanks

AP - The winsome French actress Audrey Tautou of Amelie fame has been chosen as Tom Hanks' young helpmate in cracking The Da Vinci Code in the film adaptation of the best-selling book, the French newspaper Le Parisien has reported.

According to the daily, Tautou is to play the role of Sophie Neveu, the young French investigator who helps Robert Langdon (Hanks), a symbologist, in a race to solve the murder of an elderly member of an ancient society that has protected dark secrets since the early years of Christianity.

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard opted for Tautou last week, then confirmed his decision in a Wednesday meeting with her in Paris, Le Parisien's cinema writer Alain Grasset reported without citing sources.

A string of actresses, including Sophie Marceau, sought the role that was finally narrowed down to Tautou and Linda Hardy, a former Miss France, according to the article.

Besides Amelie, Tautou starred in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2004 movie A Very Long Engagement.

Filming of the mystical thriller is expected to start in June. Sony Pictures has said it plans to release the film May 19, 2006.

The famed Louvre Museum has agreed in principal to allow scenes to be shot there, Louvre director Henri Loyrette said on Friday. It is the murder of the curator that triggers the search for the so-called Da Vinci code.

The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown, is a mix of code-breaking, art history, secret societies, religion and lore. Several other books have tried to debunk its contentious allegations - namely, that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had descendants.

I thought the film was great! I saw it last night as it came out yesturday here...it was very entertaining and mesmerizing :)

I relaly like the cast in this one. REno, Molina, Hanks, this is a pretty solid cast. This means that the script will be pulled of well. I want to have faith in Goldsman, the writer, but after Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, can you really put faith in him? At least we know the vision will be there, I really like Ron Howard as a director and it will be interesting to see where Clint Howard gets his cameo :)

Yeah the critics are not liking it. Well, they're saying it's not bad and technically there's nothing wrong with the performances or direction but it's boring. Alot of explaining. And all of this worked really well in the book but it's not translating to the screen very well.

I'm still seeing it.

Wasn't Ron Howard the director? I read something like that on the Books board.

Anyway, a movie adaptation for this story would be rich. Pretty cool. But it has to be well done. Now, the book is SO detailed in EVERYTHING that adapting the whole thing is, with like most books, impossible.

So it would be a long journey, the script I bet would suffer from major rewrites lots of times, etc, etc.

What's my point? That for this to be succesful the staff (including the actors who have to sell the movie and get all the credibility needed to make it work) has to bring their A game along with their senses at full steam.

All in all, can't wait.

Hmm, as Robert? That would be weird. I hope Ron picks an American for that role.

I  this novel. I'm in chapter 60-something right now, but I'll definitely finish it by this weekend. I have a few images in my head of each character while reading, but I haven't decided which actors I'd like to see portraying them. This will take some time to think about...
